Daily life in Aurignacian Europe during the early Upper Paleolithic

An evidence-led look at early modern human hunter-gatherers across Aurignacian Europe, separating excavated camps, food remains, tools, ornaments, and art from more tentative reconstructions of clothing and social life.

The Aurignacian appeared in different parts of Europe at different times, broadly between about 43,000 and 32,000 calibrated years ago; some regional sequences begin later, and its end overlaps with the emergence of the Gravettian. “Aurignacian” names a family of archaeological assemblages, not one people with a single language, identity, or way of life. These assemblages are strongly associated with Homo sapiens, but human remains are scarce and many site attributions rest on tools and stratigraphy rather than associated skeletons. At Lapa do Picareiro in central Portugal, for example, a sealed early Aurignacian layer dated about 41,100–38,100 years ago extended the known western range, while recent ornament research cautions against treating continent-wide technocomplexes as monolithic cultures.[1][2]

Most groups were mobile hunter-gatherers rather than villagers. They used caves, rock shelters and open-air locations across environments extending from Atlantic and Mediterranean Europe to the Danube basin and farther east. Their daily life belonged to the wider world of Upper Paleolithic Europe, but characteristic finds include blades and bladelets, antler projectile points, personal ornaments, and—in a few exceptional regions—ivory carving and musical instruments. The evidence below therefore uses named sites to illustrate possibilities; a practice documented in southwestern Germany or the Dordogne should not automatically be assigned to every Aurignacian household.

Housing and Living Spaces

Aurignacian settlement evidence includes cave entrances, rock shelters and open-air camps; it does not show permanent villages. Organic walls and roofs seldom survive, so poles, hides and brush remain plausible building materials rather than a standard house type. Camp location and duration varied with terrain, fuel, raw materials, prey and season. The open-air site of Régismont-le-Haut in Languedoc is unusually informative because one well-preserved occupation surface contains numerous hearths and complementary activity areas. It demonstrates organized outdoor residence, but not the form of every shelter.[3]

Hearths structured some living spaces. At Abri Castanet in the Vézère valley, three linked fire features were associated with stone-tool maintenance, pigment, bone and antler working, and ornament manufacture; tooth-season evidence identifies the studied occupation as cold-season. Carved rings in blocks near the former drip line may have anchored hide screens that retained heat, but this remains an interpretation. At Régismont-le-Haut, hearths cluster within shallow ancient channels and the artifact distributions distinguish a broad domestic area from a more specialized work area. These are direct site-specific patterns, stronger than a generic reconstruction of rooms or sleeping places.[3]

Other deposits combine several visits, sometimes by both humans and carnivores, and cannot be read as a single camp floor. Ash, bone, broken tools, pigment and manufacturing waste can show repeated use without revealing whether a stay lasted days, weeks or a season. Portable tools were maintained and transported, but bags, bedding, cordage and wooden frames usually decayed. Mobility is therefore well supported at a broad scale, while a precise seasonal route or household inventory cannot be recovered for “the Aurignacians” as a whole.

Food and Daily Meals

Aurignacian diets varied by region and season, and animal lists from different sites should not be combined into one menu. At Vogelherd Cave in the Swabian Jura, reindeer and horse dominate the human prey assemblage. Tooth evidence places hunting mainly in late summer and autumn, and skeletal representation indicates that complete or nearly complete carcasses were brought to the cave for secondary processing and consumption. At Lapa do Picareiro in Portugal, cut marks, percussion scars and broken long bones show butchery and marrow extraction, while bird and small-animal remains cannot yet all be attributed to people.[4][1]

These remains connect hunting to daily workloads: locating and killing prey, choosing what to transport, skinning and dismembering carcasses, cracking bones, managing refuse, and saving hide, sinew, antler or bone. Hearths establish the use of fire, but roasting, drying, smoking or stone-boiling are not equally demonstrated at every Aurignacian site. The original containers, racks and many prepared foods have disappeared, so there is no secure continent-wide meal plan or preservation routine.

Gathered plants almost certainly contributed where and when they were available, but Aurignacian plant remains are much less visible than stone and large animal bone. Fish, shellfish, birds, nuts or roots may be locally relevant; they should not be presented as universal foods without site evidence. Excavated bone assemblages are also filtered by preservation, recovery methods and carnivore activity. They record selected episodes of procurement and discard rather than the full diet.

Food sharing is reasonable in small mobile groups, especially where large carcasses yielded more meat than one person could process, but archaeological debris does not reveal a fixed rule of distribution. It cannot show whether portions followed age, kinship, hunting contribution, need or another obligation. The safest reconstruction is that food processing involved cooperation while its social terms varied and remain unknown.

Work and Labor

Aurignacian work was continuous and varied. Hunting was only one part of it, though it demanded great skill. People tracked animals, read weather, watched herd behavior, repaired weapons, and made decisions about when to travel or wait. After a kill, labor increased sharply. Hides had to be removed without damaging them, meat cut into transportable portions, bones opened for marrow, sinew saved for bindings and sewing, and antler or bone set aside for tools. If the animal was large or several animals were taken, processing could occupy many people for days.

Domestic work sustained the camp. Fuel and water had to be obtained, fires maintained, activity areas managed, dependants cared for, and possessions prepared for movement. Hide working is indicated by scrapers and other tools, although no complete Aurignacian garment or shelter covering survives. Turning a skin into a durable covering would have involved repeated cleaning, scraping, softening and repair; the exact recipes and the division of this work are unknown.

Craft work filled some of the same spaces as food processing. Knappers prepared cores, struck blades and bladelets, retouched edges and recycled broken pieces. Antler points, bone awls, ivory beads and figurines required different sequences of splitting, scraping, grinding, drilling and polishing. At Abri Castanet, manufacturing waste as well as finished objects shows that antler weapons and personal ornaments were worked beside the fire complex. Ochre and other mineral colorants were also processed at camps, but the surviving residues do not always disclose whether pigment was used on hides, bodies, objects or rock surfaces.[3]

How labor was divided by age, gender or status is not directly known. Children could learn through observation and practice, and experienced people must have transmitted difficult skills, but the artifacts do not identify formal apprenticeships or fixed professions. Mobility itself required labor—selecting routes, transporting people and equipment, and setting up another camp—yet no single annual circuit can be reconstructed for all regions.

Social Structure

Small residential groups and wider contacts are plausible for mobile hunter-gatherers, but Aurignacian sites do not preserve named kin groups, marriage rules or political offices. The size and composition of a camp could change between short logistical stops and larger residential occupations. Cooperation in transport, food processing, fire maintenance and craft is visible through the scale and spatial organization of work; the kinship terms behind it are not.

Personal ornaments supply firmer evidence for shared and regional practices. Aurignacian sites have yielded many forms made from marine and freshwater shells, animal teeth, ivory, bone, antler and stone. A 2025 continent-wide analysis found geographical structure but also warned that bead types alone cannot identify ethnic groups or show exactly how ornaments were arranged on bodies or clothing. With primary Aurignacian burials extremely rare, claims that a pendant marked a particular gender, rank, age or ritual office remain hypotheses.[2]

Exceptional finds show that social communication extended beyond subsistence. At Hohle Fels and neighbouring Swabian Jura caves, Aurignacian deposits contain mammoth-ivory figurines and flutes made from bird bone and ivory; the female figurine from Hohle Fels is at least 35,000 years old. These objects demonstrate skilled image-making and music in one region, but not their audiences, stories or ceremonies. Similar caution applies to parietal art: some engraved or painted surfaces belong within Aurignacian contexts, yet a charcoal date, floor deposit or stylistic resemblance does not automatically date every nearby image.[6][7]

Tools and Technology

Aurignacian stone technology included blades and small bladelets, but their production was not uniform across Europe. At Hohle Fels, knappers used several kinds of burin as cores for fine bladelets, and the assemblage combines traits that do not fit neatly into the phase system devised for southwestern Europe. Some pieces traditionally called scrapers or burins were therefore also cores, while other retouched edges served cutting, scraping or working harder materials. Handles, shafts, bindings and adhesives rarely survive, but impact damage and tool form indicate that at least some bladelets belonged to composite equipment.[5]

Split-based antler points are characteristic of many Early Aurignacian assemblages. Production debris at Abri Castanet shows the sequence from antler blank to finished armature, and concentration of that waste beside the hearths places weapon making within domestic space. Bone awls could pierce hides, but eyed needles should not be treated as a routine Aurignacian tool in western Europe; their secure widespread appearance there is later. Ivory carving required controlled splitting, scraping and polishing, whether the result was a bead, pendant, figurine or part of a flute.[3][8]

Technology also included perishable knowledge: cordage, knots, wooden shafts, hide containers, carrying gear and perhaps traps or screens. Abri Castanet has yielded a fat-burning lamp, so portable light is directly attested at that site rather than merely inferred for the whole period. Pigment preparation, flute making and ornament production show that technical skill served display and communication as well as food getting. Toolkits were maintained and transported, but their contents changed with task and region.

Clothing and Materials

No complete Aurignacian garment survives. Clothing made from hides and furs is a strong inference from climate, hunted fauna, hide-working tools and bone awls, but the cut, number of layers and sewing materials remain uncertain. Awls can make closely spaced holes for lacing or stitching without an eye; the absence of routine eyed needles therefore does not mean that fitted clothing was impossible. It does mean that named garments such as parkas, leggings, mittens and boots should be presented as plausible reconstructions, not excavated facts.[8]

Clothing and other hide goods required repeated maintenance because moisture, abrasion and poor preparation could stiffen or damage skins. Sinew, hide strips or plant fiber may have supplied thread and bindings, but these materials rarely survive. Shells, teeth and ivory ornaments might have been strung, worn directly or fixed to clothing or equipment; use-wear and burial position would be needed to distinguish those possibilities, and Aurignacian burials provide little help. The ornaments demonstrate attention to bodily display without preserving a complete outfit or a universal dress code.[2]

How We Know—and What Remains Uncertain

Aurignacian daily life is reconstructed by combining stratigraphy and radiocarbon dates with stone-tool refits, microscopic wear, hearth sediments, cut-marked animal bone, tooth-season studies, manufacturing waste, pigments and ornaments. Each source answers a different question. Refitted flakes can locate knapping; cut marks can establish butchery; tooth growth can suggest season of death; debris can identify production. None by itself reveals a household timetable, a person's gender, or the meaning of an image.

Preservation also favors caves, stone, teeth and burned material. Open-air camps, plants, wood, fiber, hides and short visits are easier to lose, while cave layers may blend repeated human occupations with carnivore activity. Older excavations often lacked fine sieving or precise three-dimensional recording. For that reason, named sites here are examples rather than a composite “typical day,” and social rules, garment forms, plant-food proportions and annual routes remain deliberately open.

Daily life in Aurignacian Europe combined movement, food processing, fire management, craft and symbolic expression, but not in one uniform way. The clearest sites show technically skilled groups organizing work around hearths and maintaining portable equipment; the broader social reconstruction remains less certain. Later communities such as Magdalenian reindeer hunters developed different late Ice Age traditions, while retaining the importance of mobility, cooperation and material knowledge.
