Daily life in ‘Ain Ghazal (c. 8,500-5,500 BCE)
A grounded look at a large Neolithic village in the Levant, where farming, herding, plastered houses, ritual objects, and household labor shaped daily life.
‘Ain Ghazal stood on terraces beside a spring and the Wadi Zarqa, now within northeastern Amman, Jordan. It grew from a small settlement into one of the largest known Neolithic sites in the southern Levant. Its residents cultivated crops, hunted and gathered wild resources, managed sheep and goats, built and rebuilt houses, buried selected dead, and made remarkable plaster figures. Archaeology records major changes across that long span, so daily life early in the settlement was not identical to life near its end.[1][10]
Dates require particular care. Older excavation reports placed the sequence at about 7,250-5,000 BCE because they reported radiocarbon ages without calendar calibration. A later synthesis places the main phases approximately at Middle Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (MPPNB), 8,500-7,500 BCE; Late PPNB, 7,500-6,900 BCE; PPNC, 6,900-6,400 BCE; and Yarmoukian Pottery Neolithic, 6,400-5,500 BCE. These are working ranges rather than exact boundaries, and published schemes differ slightly.[1] Excavation sampled parts of a large, disturbed site, so houses and deposits do not amount to a census or a complete record of every resident.
Housing and Living Spaces
Early homes were rectangular buildings with stone lower walls, mud construction above, and carefully finished interiors. Excavated MPPNB houses commonly began as single rooms of about 5 by 5 meters, with storage and other domestic evidence concentrated indoors. Houses were repeatedly altered, and later PPNB buildings became more compartmentalized. By the PPNC and Yarmoukian phases, hearths, pits, plaster working, and other tasks occur more often in open areas or courtyards, sometimes under light shade structures. This pattern documents changing use of space; it does not by itself identify nuclear or extended families.[2][3]
Lime-plastered floors created durable, washable surfaces, sometimes colored red, while mud walls, roofs, hearths, storage places, and floors required renewal. Firing pits show that some plaster preparation happened outside. The work consumed limestone, water, and fuel, but early calculations of vast fuel use were later revised when analyses found less lime in the floors than first assumed. Construction timber and daily cooking fires still placed demands on woodland; the scale of their environmental effect cannot be calculated securely.[4]
The spring and river supported long occupation, while terraces provided building ground. As the community grew, houses stood close to paths, middens, work areas, and neighbors. Dense occupation made cooperation over building and access useful, but it also concentrated smoke and refuse and increased demand for fuel, grazing, and cultivable land. Population estimates are especially uncertain because archaeologists cannot show that the whole maximum site area was occupied at once.[2]
Food and Daily Meals
Charred plant remains include domesticated two-row hulled barley, emmer and einkorn wheat, peas, lentils, and chickpeas; pulses were unusually prominent in the recovered assemblage. Wild plants remained useful. Middle PPNB animal bone represents more than fifty species from woodland, riverine, steppe, and desert settings. Goats made up about half of that sample. Their culling pattern, size, and pathologies indicate human management even though the bones did not yet display an unambiguous domestic form. Game contributed roughly half of the early animal assemblage but less than a tenth of later material, evidence for a long shift towards sheep-and-goat herding rather than a single “agricultural revolution.”[5][6]
Grain and pulses had to be harvested, dried, cleaned, and protected from insects and damp. Early indoor storage was limited: one house had a corner pit, while substantial quantities of charred peas, lentils, and some barley probably once stood in baskets or bags. Grinding stones reduced cereals into meal, and hearths supplied heat for preparation, but the finds do not preserve a recipe or standard meal.[2]
Stable-isotope measurements of MPPNB and LPPNB barley indicate consistently moderate water availability. Researchers have suggested carefully chosen or watered plots near the spring, floodplain, or terraces, but the result does not prove a particular irrigation system. The same study found no evidence for intensive manuring. Farming therefore depended on close knowledge of soils and moisture as well as on water carrying and storage.[5] Herding supplied meat, hides, bone, and perhaps other products, but the cited evidence does not establish how often milk was consumed.
Work and Labor
Work followed several overlapping calendars. Sowing and harvest demanded concentrated effort; goats needed supervision; building repair and plaster production consumed water and fuel; and food preparation, cleaning, tool maintenance, and childcare recurred each day. Isotope evidence suggests that caprines in the PPNC ate more plants from arid settings than earlier animals did, consistent with use of drier grazing land, but it cannot reconstruct a herder's route or prove seasonal migration.[5]
Residents knapped flint blades, shaped bone tools, worked wood, made baskets and mats, prepared pigments, and, in the Yarmoukian phase, produced pottery. Firing limestone, crushing and mixing plaster, applying it, and polishing a floor demanded learned sequences of work, while blade production likewise required skill. Finds can identify activity areas and technical choices, but they rarely reveal whether a craft was a person's full-time occupation or how tasks were assigned by gender or age.[2]
Social Structure
Households organized food, shelter, and care, but architecture only approximates the group that shared a dwelling; it cannot establish biological kinship. The settlement's size also required relationships beyond one house. Neighbors shared paths and water access and could pool building or harvest work. No written evidence identifies chiefs, councils, or fixed ranks. Differences in house form, storage, and ritual treatment can suggest social distinctions without revealing a precise political system.[2][3]
Mortuary treatment was selective and varied. Some people were buried beneath floors or in open areas, while other bodies entered refuse deposits; many inhabitants are not represented among the excavated burials. In some cases a skull was later removed, and a small number received modeled plaster faces. These practices linked particular bodies to houses and community memory, but “ancestor worship” remains an interpretation rather than an excavated fact.[9]
Two main caches of large plaster statues and busts were carefully placed in pits. Technical study shows that plaster was applied in stages to bundles of reeds bound with cordage, with most figures lying horizontally during manufacture. They may have been displayed or accessorized before deposition, but neither their duration of use nor the identities they represented are known.[7] Much smaller human and animal figurines occur in varied indoor and outdoor contexts. Together the finds show that practices now labeled ritual took place within and around domestic space, not that every figurine had the same purpose.[2]
Tools and Technology
Flint blades and sickle elements cut plants; axes and adzes worked wood; grinding stones processed grain and pigments; and awls or points pierced hides and fibers. Baskets, wooden handles, cords, and mats were probably common even though they rarely survive. Mud construction, lime plaster, hearths, and storage installations were technologies as important as portable tools. Pottery appeared only in later phases, so earlier households relied on baskets, stone bowls, skins, wood, and plastered containers.[2][9]
Clothing and Materials
No garment from ‘Ain Ghazal survives, so claims about clothing cut or style would be speculative. Bone tools were relatively rare, and excavators associated most with sewing, weaving, and work in leather or skins. Beads and pigments document personal adornment, but not the wearer's status or the form of a garment. Baskets, bags, cordage, wooden handles, and hides were probably far more prominent in daily life than their survival rate suggests, but the evidence does not assign their manufacture to women, men, or a particular age group.[9]
Daily life at ‘Ain Ghazal was neither a simple farming routine nor a story told only by its statues. It joined water carrying, crop processing, herding, hunting, house maintenance, craft, burial, and collective memory. Its long sequence shows residents adapting their homes and labor as the settlement expanded and contracted and as grazing, farming, climate, and local resources changed. Geoarchaeological evidence links the final decline with increasing aridity, while the scale of human-caused vegetation loss remains debated; no single cause securely explains every change.[8]
