Daily life in the Tabon Caves area of Palawan during the 1st-5th centuries CE

On the western coast of Palawan, the limestone headland of Lipuun Point contains the caves collectively known as the Tabon Caves. During the first five centuries CE, this landscape belonged to communities whose material world included earthenware vessels, metal implements, and personal ornaments. Archaeologists place these centuries within the Philippine Metal Age; “Classical” is the organizing category used here. The caves preserve a long sequence, from much earlier occupation to later burial and trade deposits. This account concerns the people who used the surrounding area, without assuming that its burial chambers were their homes.[1]

Housing and Living Spaces

The strongest distinction is between places for living and places for depositing the dead. Robert Fox, who directed the major early excavations, proposed that the jar-burying communities occupied small coastal or riverine hamlets and practised cultivation alongside fishing, gathering, and hunting. He explicitly drew on ethnohistorical comparison for this reconstruction. It is a useful working model for the surrounding landscape, rather than an excavated plan of a village dated precisely to 1–500 CE.[2]

Within that model, access to water would have mattered as much as shelter. A household needed drinking water, a place to prepare food, and routes to the resources on which it depended. A convenient landing place could shorten journeys carrying heavy vessels or gathered materials. Nearby ground suitable for planting would have offered different advantages from a sheltered shore. These are practical considerations for interpreting settlement choices, not evidence that every family lived beside a river mouth or followed the same seasonal movements.

Timber, bamboo, leaves, and other plant materials are plausible building resources in this tropical setting. Their use would leave much less visible architecture than stone walls. However, the evidence consulted does not establish local house dimensions, roof shapes, raised floors, or the number of people sharing a dwelling during these centuries. Present-day Palawan houses cannot simply supply the missing details. A reconstruction should therefore leave room for different arrangements, including spaces where sleeping, storing possessions, and craft work overlapped.

Maintenance gives a more cautious way to think about domestic routines. Any plant-built shelter would need replacement materials, sound bindings, and protection for belongings during rain. Firewood and food containers would need places where they remained usable; a cooking fire would require attention to smoke and sparks. These conditional needs help explain why a living space extended beyond its sleeping area. Paths, water sources, working ground, and access to other households formed part of its practical setting. The caves add a different dimension: durable places that could remain significant while dwellings made from perishable materials were repaired, moved, or replaced.

Food and Daily Meals

The coastal setting offered access to marine resources, while inland vegetation and potentially cultivated ground supplied other possibilities. The broad mixed-subsistence model is more defensible than a detailed menu. Neither a named breakfast nor a fixed daily ration can be recovered from burial vessels. Earlier food remains from the cave complex also need their own dates: evidence that people ate a particular animal thousands of years before this period does not establish how often it appeared in a meal during the first centuries CE.

Rice deserves particular caution. Fox described worked shells identified by local excavation workers as possible rice scrapers, but treated their agricultural interpretation as suggestive rather than conclusive. Such objects do not by themselves demonstrate irrigated fields, a rice-based diet, or daily bowls of boiled rice.[2] Cultivation could coexist with substantial gathering and fishing. Without securely dated plant remains and a representative sample of domestic refuse, the balance between crops, wild plants, and animal foods remains unresolved for the communities considered here.

Food preparation nevertheless involved material constraints. Water had to reach the cooking place, fuel had to be gathered, and edible portions had to be separated from shells, skins, or other unwanted material. Earthenware made heating liquids possible, but a pot’s shape alone cannot identify its contents. Roasting and boiling are reasonable possibilities rather than documented recipes. Drying or smoking could extend the usefulness of a catch, although the sources used here do not establish particular preservation installations or local seasonings for this period.

A household combining several food sources would also have faced competing demands on time. A gathering trip, tending a planting area, preparing fuel, and processing a catch could not all be completed by the same person at once. Weather and the availability of food would affect those choices. Sharing tasks or food is a plausible response, but precise rules of distribution are unknown. Burial pottery records a separate setting: a vessel placed with human remains may have served an offering or ceremonial purpose. Its presence should not turn a possible funeral provision into an ordinary household meal.[3]

Work and Labor

Work can be approached through the steps needed to produce and use surviving objects. An earthenware vessel required suitable clay, preparation, shaping, drying, and firing. A large burial container also had to survive handling and transport. These operations involved knowledge of materials and the ability to judge when a vessel was ready for the next stage. They do not reveal whether pottery was made by each household, exchanged between neighbors, or obtained from people who devoted more time to the craft.

Moving a fragile, bulky jar into a cave created a different task from carrying a small bowl home. Routes, grip, balance, and protection against knocks mattered. Secondary burial added the handling and transfer of human remains after an earlier stage of treatment.[3] These activities imply preparation and coordination, although the number of participants and their relationships are not recorded. Making equipment and arranging funerals belonged to the same human economy as securing food and maintaining shelter; time spent on one activity affected what could be done elsewhere.

Objects also connect local work to a wider maritime world. Scientific analysis of ancient jade documents a network involving Taiwan, the Philippines, Borneo, Vietnam, and peninsular Thailand, including ornaments from the Tabon complex. Some characteristic ear-pendant forms circulated approximately between 500 BCE and 500 CE.[4] The earlier Sa Huynh coastal communities offer a relevant comparison for this regional circulation of ornaments. The comparison does not mean that every Palawan household traded directly with Vietnam or that an imported object arrived in one uninterrupted voyage.

At the household level, even acquiring an object did not end the work associated with it. Containers needed carrying, cutting edges needed care, and ornaments needed secure attachment. Wooden handles and bindings could wear out before the durable object they supported. Children and inexperienced adults would have needed to learn practical skills, but the archaeological record does not identify formal apprenticeships or a fixed division of work by gender. It supports a picture of skilled activity more readily than a list of named occupations, wage levels, or working hours.

Social Structure

Burial practice provides the clearest evidence for relationships extending beyond an individual’s lifetime. Across the Philippine Metal Age, secondary jar burial involved placing skeletal remains in a container after an earlier interment. Smaller vessels, ornaments, tools, and shell objects could accompany the dead.[3] This was a process, not merely a single act of disposal. For the people responsible, it required remembering an earlier burial and completing further obligations. The precise ceremonies and spoken explanations are not preserved for the Tabon communities of 1–500 CE.

People arranging a burial made choices about which objects to include and where to place the container. Those decisions could express attachment, identity, standing, or customary responsibilities. Differences between graves therefore deserve attention, but they cannot automatically be translated into a social ladder. The National Museum discusses grave goods as evidence relevant to distinctions of status across Philippine archaeological periods.[5] For this particular place and time, neither a wealthy grave nor an undecorated jar establishes a complete system of hereditary classes.

The famous Manunggul Jar belongs to an earlier chapter. Dated to approximately 890–710 BCE, its lid depicts two figures in a boat and is interpreted in relation to the journey of the dead. It cannot serve as a contemporary portrait of clothing, boats, or religious belief in the first five centuries CE.[6] Its value here is chronological: it shows that elaborate funerary expression had a long local history. Continuity in using jars does not require every later community to have retained an identical explanation of death.

Everyday social arrangements are harder to specify. Cooperation in carrying objects, obtaining food, and maintaining living spaces could have brought relatives and neighbors together, but household membership is not recoverable from a jar alone. Marriage residence, inheritance, dispute settlement, and authority within a settlement remain uncertain. Modern ethnic names and ethnographic customs should not be assigned unchanged to ancient burials. The surviving evidence allows discussion of shared practices and connections, while leaving the participants’ own group names, languages, and detailed rules of belonging open.

Tools and Technology

“Metal Age” describes an archaeological sequence, not a household equipped entirely in metal. The National Museum’s tool collections distinguish earlier stone and shell technologies from the later use of copper, bronze, and iron in the Philippines.[7] At Tabon, Fox’s developed Metal Age assemblages include iron implements and increasing quantities of glass ornaments. His chronology extends the jar-burial tradition to around 500 CE and possibly beyond; it does not date every surviving object to one of the centuries covered here.[2]

A cutting edge was only one part of usable equipment. Handles, ties, carrying containers, and working surfaces could be essential even when they disappeared from the archaeological record. Experimental and microscopic research on much older Tabon stone tools has identified traces consistent with working plant strips, relevant to bindings and potentially woven objects. Those tools date to roughly 39,000–33,000 years ago, so they demonstrate an earlier capacity rather than a specific first-millennium toolkit.[8]

For the period in question, technology is best understood as combinations of materials and skills. A metal object does not prove that its owner smelted ore locally; a bead does not identify its wearer as a beadmaker. Earthenware, ornaments, and implements could travel separately from the knowledge needed to manufacture them. Distinguishing possession, use, repair, and production keeps the reconstruction close to what the finds can actually show.

Clothing and Materials

Personal ornaments survive more clearly than garments. The National Museum records earrings, anklets, bracelets, and beads from the Tabon Cave Complex within its wider archaeological collection.[9] This establishes a local history of bodily adornment, but the collection spans multiple periods. It is not a ready-made wardrobe for a person living in 300 CE. Objects associated with a burial may also represent special treatment of the dead rather than everything worn during work or rest.

Plant-derived clothing is plausible, but the sources consulted do not provide a securely dated local garment from these five centuries. Barkcloth and woven fibers should remain possibilities rather than asserted fabrics. The earlier evidence for working plant strips concerns a technological process; it does not prove a particular loom, weave, skirt, or loincloth in this period. Climate alone cannot establish how much clothing people wore, and modern regional dress cannot supply ancient colors, patterns, or gender distinctions.

Ornaments offer a firmer connection between materials and personal appearance. The jade research places some Tabon objects within a wider history of shared forms and movement across the sea.[4] Wearing or keeping such an object required practical care, including attachment and protection against loss. Whether it marked age, affiliation, wealth, or another relationship depended on meanings that have not survived. Clothing and adornment therefore present different levels of visibility: durable objects can be studied directly, while the fabric, cord, or body arrangements surrounding them remain much less certain.

Daily life around the Tabon Caves during the first five centuries CE emerges through the relationship between a coastal landscape, useful materials, and obligations to other people. The burial record preserves objects selected to accompany the dead; it leaves homes, meals, and ordinary clothing less visible. Read with those limits, the evidence supports an account of skilled work and regional connections without turning much earlier cave occupation into a portrait of later households.
