Daily life in Angkor Borei during the 1st-5th centuries CE
Rice, river fish, earthenware, and household work in an early urban community of the lower Mekong.
Between the 1st and 5th centuries CE, Angkor Borei was an established settlement in what is now southern Cambodia. Its inhabitants lived where elevated ground met seasonally flooded lowlands, with waterways connecting neighboring communities and routes toward the coast. The town belonged to the lower Mekong world associated with Funan, although that name does not describe a single, archaeologically uniform society. Angkor Borei is also distinct from the much later Angkor near Siem Reap. Excavated pottery, food remains, and burials illuminate its early residents more directly than later temple imagery does. Evidence is strongest for particular excavation areas and the earlier centuries; it cannot supply an identical household portrait for all five centuries.[1][2]
Housing and Living Spaces
Choosing where to live meant balancing access to water against the risk of inundation. Regional survey places Angkor Borei beside low ground suitable for cultivation as floodwater receded, with higher land offering more secure habitation. A household's surroundings therefore included both dry working surfaces and routes whose usefulness changed with the season. The settlement was connected to a wider inhabited landscape, rather than separated from its food supply by an empty hinterland. Moving between homes, fields, and water was part of living in this environment.[2]
Ordinary house plans are much less securely known than the outline of the settlement. Timber frames, plant roofing, and woven walling are plausible materials in this setting, but the excavations cited here do not establish a standard dwelling for the whole period. Raised floors would have offered protection against damp and shallow flooding; they should be treated as a reasonable reconstruction, not a demonstrated feature of every house. Neither the number of rooms nor the size of a typical resident family can be recovered simply from the site's extent.
The surviving enclosure surrounds approximately 300 hectares. Its brick and earth construction represents investment in a shared built environment, but an enclosed area is not a measure of continuously packed housing. Dating work places early wall construction broadly within the first six centuries CE, while many other brick monuments belong later. It would therefore be misleading to fill the early town with the surviving religious architecture of subsequent centuries. Domestic buildings, open ground, and burial places must be considered separately from the most durable structures.[1][3]
Within a reconstructed home, the essential spatial problem was keeping people, provisions, and working materials sheltered without obstructing cooking and movement. Dry storage, ventilation, and access to a fire would matter more than an assumed division into specialized rooms. Organic houses also imply recurring replacement of vulnerable materials, although no household maintenance calendar survives. Potsherds and accumulated occupation deposits preserve evidence of repeated use and disposal; they do not identify whose sleeping place, kitchen, or doorway occupied each patch of ground.[4]
Food and Daily Meals
Rice provides the clearest starting point for the food economy. Excavators recovered soil lumps associated with paddy agriculture, and regional research identifies conditions favorable to rice growing. Isotope analysis of people buried at Vat Komnou is consistent with substantial consumption of C3 plants, a group that includes rice. This supports a rice-based reconstruction when considered alongside the other evidence, but isotopes alone cannot name a crop or distinguish particular recipes. Nor do they establish equal access to grain for every household throughout the period.[4][5]
Fish supplied an important complement. The animal assemblage includes freshwater and brackish-water species, with snakehead and climbing perch especially prominent among identified fish remains. Fish were also placed in some burial vessels, showing that their significance extended beyond ordinary consumption. Pig, cattle, and chicken remains broaden the range of animals represented, but bones from a settlement and cemetery are not a menu recording how often each meat was eaten. Offerings, discarded meals, and other deposits must be distinguished when interpreting the finds.[6]
Turning grain and fish into food required more work than obtaining the ingredients. Rice needed processing before cooking, water had to reach the cooking place, and fuel had to be gathered and kept usable. These are practical implications of the food evidence rather than a recovered timetable. Boiling grain and cooking fish in earthenware are plausible activities, while exact seasonings, serving arrangements, and meal frequency remain uncertain. Modern Cambodian dishes cannot be assigned to these centuries merely because their basic ingredients were available.
Food storage linked meals to the agricultural year. A harvest could feed people beyond the season in which it was gathered only if provisions were protected from moisture and pests. Fresh catches created a different problem: they needed prompt consumption or some means of preservation. Drying and other preservation methods are possibilities, but the evidence discussed here does not establish a particular fermented fish product. Daily provision is best understood as a combination of cultivated staples, aquatic resources, and repeated household preparation, with the surviving evidence stronger on ingredients than on the finished meal.
Work and Labor
Food production supported the settlement's other activities. Cultivators worked in a landscape where different elevations offered different relationships to seasonal water. Flood-recession rice growing has been proposed for the surrounding lowlands, rather than a single system of permanently irrigated fields everywhere. Preparing a growing area, tending plants, harvesting, and processing grain created successive demands on labor. The archaeological landscape helps explain these opportunities, but it does not reveal each family's landholding, harvest size, or division of tasks. Agricultural work could connect residents of the town with people living nearer their fields.[2]
Pottery gives firmer evidence of a local craft. Chemical studies support production at or near Angkor Borei using similar alluvial clay sources for several different wares. Manufacturing involved obtaining and preparing clay, shaping vessels, finishing surfaces, drying, and firing. Each stage required judgment: a vessel that cracked before use represented lost material, fuel, and time. The surviving pots show learned practices continuing across changes in appearance. They do not reveal whether potters worked full time, how they were paid, or whether a particular age or gender controlled the craft.[7]
Water transport connected such local production with wider exchange. Investigations of ancient canal sediments support the antiquity of parts of the network around Angkor Borei, although individual channels have their own histories of excavation, silting, and reuse. For people moving bulky goods, a usable water route could reduce the burden of carrying everything overland. Keeping such routes functional also involved labor: excavated channels required the removal of material, and subsequent sediment accumulation could obstruct them. Dating a canal does not identify the workers or the arrangements under which they worked.[8]
Exchange also brought small, valuable objects into the settlement. Imported materials imply chains of handling, transport, and negotiation, without proving that every owner had traveled overseas. Alongside these visible connections, domestic work remained indispensable: preparing food, caring for children, managing provisions, and maintaining shelter. Such activities seldom leave a clearly labeled workplace. They belong in a reconstruction of the economy even though it is impossible to assign them to named occupations or to reconstruct wages and working hours.
Social Structure
Angkor Borei's social relationships are visible through uneven fragments rather than a complete account of ranks. Large shared works imply coordination beyond individual households, while access to exchanged valuables suggests differences in connections and resources. Neither observation supplies a precise ladder of occupations or legal categories. The people making pots, supplying food, maintaining homes, and moving goods participated in overlapping relationships that cannot be reduced to a list of official titles. Family membership and neighborhood cooperation are plausible organizing ties, but their exact rules remain undocumented.
Vat Komnou offers evidence from people themselves. Excavations recovered at least sixty burials, including adults and children, from a relatively small area. Early publications placed cemetery use approximately between 200 BCE and 400 CE; subsequent analyses refine the chronology of particular remains. The sample therefore overlaps the opening centuries of this article without representing every generation through the 5th century. Dental wear, caries, and other skeletal observations give information about bodily experience that prestige objects alone cannot provide. The excavated proportions of men, women, and children should not be converted directly into the town's population structure.[9]
Connections outside the region involved people as well as objects. Ancient DNA research identified substantial South Asian ancestry in one young individual dated to the 1st-3rd centuries CE. That result shows that contact could enter family histories, not simply exchange networks. It does not establish the child's language, social standing, birthplace, or the ancestry of everyone buried nearby. Material fashions and biological ancestry also need not coincide: a person could use an imported ornament without being an immigrant or identifying with its place of manufacture.[10]
Care for the dead brought material goods into social practice. Burial vessels and ornaments reflect choices made by surviving community members, rather than a transparent inventory of each person's everyday possessions. Differences between graves may express identity, ritual, chronology, or resources in varying combinations. The evidence supports a community with shared mortuary practices and external contacts, while leaving many domestic relationships unresolved. Marriage rules, inheritance arrangements, and the authority of particular household members cannot responsibly be reconstructed from grave contents alone.[9]
Tools and Technology
Earthenware technology is especially well documented. Vessel surfaces and forming traces indicate hand building, including techniques involving coils and a paddle used against an internal anvil. Clay anvils survive from excavation. Potters smoothed or burnished selected surfaces, and their products differed in shape, color, and finish. These were skilled choices within an established tradition, rather than evidence that every change came from imported pottery. The archaeological investigations did not recover workshops or kilns that would allow a complete reconstruction of production facilities.[7]
Construction technology operated at a different scale. The enclosure required prepared building material and the movement of substantial quantities of earth. Brick dating supplies evidence about when materials were fired, but rebuilding and reuse complicate the history of individual structures. A wall therefore embodies several kinds of practical knowledge: making material that survives exposure, placing it securely, and organizing work across a larger area. These requirements can be recognized without assuming the precise measuring tools, scaffolding, or labor arrangements used.[3]
Waterways were another working technology, combining natural channels with excavated connections. Their value depended on water depth and continued accessibility. For daily life, the significant outcome was the ability to move people and supplies through the landscape. Canal evidence supports that capability without proving a uniform irrigation grid or a single construction episode for the entire delta. Different stretches could remain useful, silt up, or be cleared at different times.[8]
Clothing and Materials
Cloth is poorly represented in the evidence used for this early settlement. No complete everyday wardrobe can be reconstructed from the excavated material discussed here. Wrapped lengths of fabric are plausible in the regional setting, but naming a modern garment would imply a continuity of cut and use that has not been demonstrated. The same caution applies to specifying a standard fiber, dye, or costume for farmers and craftspeople. Later sculpture provides evidence for later visual conventions, not a direct view of what every early resident wore.
Personal ornament survives more clearly. Angkor Borei's finds include glass and stone beads, among them carnelian, agate, quartz, and garnet. Analyses of materials and manufacture connect parts of this assemblage with South Asian production and wider Mekong exchange. Such objects could bring color and visible distinction to personal appearance. Their presence does not establish a compulsory dress code, and beads recovered from cemetery soil cannot always be assigned to a particular person or arrangement.[11]
There is consequently a difference between reconstructing an ornament and reconstructing a costume. A perforated bead demonstrates provision for stringing or attachment, but not necessarily whether it belonged at the neck, wrist, or on clothing. Fastenings and organic cords may disappear while the durable object remains. For ordinary fabric, wear, repair, and eventual disposal are practical possibilities rather than documented routines. The most secure portrait combines limited knowledge of clothing with tangible evidence that some residents possessed carefully made personal adornments.
Daily life in Angkor Borei depended on the relationship between an inhabited center, its food-producing surroundings, and its waterways. Rice processing, fishing, pottery making, carrying, and household care gave that relationship practical form. The evidence reveals a locally rooted community with far-reaching contacts, while leaving room for differences between households and changes across the first five centuries CE.
