Daily life along the Murray River during c. 1000 BCE–500 CE

Food and seasonal movement in Aboriginal river country, with a focus on the middle and lower Murray in southeastern Australia.

Between about 1000 BCE and 500 CE, Aboriginal communities along the Murray River obtained food from channels, billabongs, wetlands, and adjoining dry country. A billabong could hold water after its connection to the river closed; its changing edges offered different opportunities from the flowing channel. Cooking places, shell deposits, and tools reveal repeated use of this varied landscape. The period belongs to the later Holocene, within a much longer Aboriginal history. “Ancient” is a chronological category here, not a description of a single Murray culture or a stage through which all societies passed.

The strongest examples discussed below come from Calperum near Renmark and the lower Murray valley. Research at Calperum identifies more widespread mound and midden activity after about 2500 calibrated years before present, approximately 550 BCE, within this article’s period. Wet and dry phases changed the opportunities available over generations.[1] Archaeology supplies the dated framework; nineteenth-century accounts and later Aboriginal knowledge help explain practical activities where organic materials have disappeared. Those later sources are identified as comparisons, rather than treated as eyewitness accounts of life two thousand years earlier.

Housing and Living Spaces

A useful place to stay needed more than water. It also needed ground suitable for resting, access to food and fuel, and protection from weather. The distribution of sites at Calperum shows that people arranged activities in relation to the floodplain’s landforms. Cooking locations beside wetlands and other occupation areas formed parts of a larger inhabited landscape. This suggests that a household’s living space extended beyond its shelter to places for gathering, preparing food, and obtaining materials, with different tasks drawing people to different ground.[2]

As a practical reconstruction, rising water could require a move to higher ground, while falling water reopened parts of the floodplain. In dry phases, reliable channels and surviving wetlands became especially useful. Calperum’s environmental history supports such changing opportunities, though it cannot give the itinerary of an individual household.[1]

Some shelters were natural. Ngaut Ngaut, known in early archaeological reports as Devon Downs, preserves a sequence of meals and tool use beneath a rock overhang. The South Australian Museum describes particularly intensive use between roughly 4000 and 2000 years ago, overlapping the earlier part of this article’s period. It interprets the site as a place where people stopped to eat while travelling to and from the river. Repeated visits to a sheltered spot therefore need not mean that a family lived there continuously.[3]

Built shelters are harder to reconstruct for these centuries. In his account published in 1845, Edward John Eyre described branch shelters covered with vegetation, bark shelters, and bedding made from plant material. These are later observations, useful for understanding how locally available materials could provide cover.[4] They cannot establish a standard ancient house plan. A short stay and an extended occupation would require different investments in gathering coverings, arranging a sleeping surface, and maintaining shelter; the surviving evidence rarely tells us precisely how a particular family balanced those needs.

Earth mounds also require care in interpretation. Excavations of six Calperum mounds found abundant burnt clay but little general occupation debris. Researchers interpreted them as specialised cooking places, without evidence that they served as living areas.[5] A mound should therefore not automatically be pictured as the floor of a hut. Cooking, sleeping, and other activities could occupy separate locations. Returning to an established oven site expresses familiarity with a place, while leaving the length and arrangement of nearby residential stays open.

Food and Daily Meals

Freshwater mussels leave some of the clearest evidence of meals. Their shells survive where many softer foods disappear, accumulating in deposits called middens. River mussels and mussels associated with stiller waters offered resources in different habitats. Victorian heritage guidance identifies both Alathyria jacksoni and Velesunio ambiguus in freshwater middens, often alongside ash, charcoal, or burnt earth.[6] Such deposits demonstrate collection and consumption. Their visibility does not mean that shellfish supplied the same proportion of every community’s food, or that each shell layer represents an equally long stay.

At Ngaut Ngaut, fish remains accompany shellfish, mammal bones, and emu eggshell in the archaeological sequence. The evidence establishes a varied food economy rather than an exclusively aquatic diet.[3] A successful fishing trip and the collection of plant foods also involved different preparation tasks. Meals would reflect what had been obtained and what was ready to eat, but the remains cannot reconstruct fixed breakfast or evening menus. For comparison, daily life around Sydney Harbour during the same period explores fishing and shellfish gathering in a coastal setting with different waters and species.

Wetland plants are an important part of the Murray picture. The Calperum excavators interpret oven mounds as evidence for processing emergent aquatic plants, including bulrushes. Their underground storage organs contain starch, and prolonged heating helps make such foods usable. This is a supported interpretation of cooking technology and habitat, rather than a complete list of plants recovered from each oven.[5] Leaves, roots, and prepared portions preserve unevenly; a meal’s plant component may consequently be much less visible than its shells or bones.

Access changed through the year. Christopher Wilson’s lower Murray study brings together archaeological evidence and later knowledge suggesting warmer-season fishing and shellfish collection at particular places. Cold weather, water conditions, and the accessibility of food all affected the possibilities.[7] This does not yield one calendar for the entire river. A productive wetland could support repeated visits, while an unfavourable season changed the mix of foods available. The practical rhythm was finding, carrying, preparing, cooking, and sharing food as conditions allowed.

Work and Labor

Obtaining food involved a chain of work extending beyond the moment of capture or collection. Shellfish had to be located and carried from the water to a cooking place. Early observers in Victoria recorded women and children gathering mussels, although those accounts cannot establish an unchanged division of work for c. 1000 BCE–500 CE.[6] Gathering was skilled activity: knowing where suitable beds lay could reduce unsuccessful searching. The archaeological result may be only a patch of shells, leaving the journey and the people who made it largely invisible.

Cooking likewise required preparation. Research undertaken with the River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation identifies clay heat retainers in Calperum ovens and interprets the mounds as accumulations from repeated cooking. Fuel collection, preparation of an oven, and handling food formed connected tasks. The researchers propose that bulrush processing could supply both food and fibre.[8] If so, the work of obtaining something to eat also contributed material for other household needs. The oven’s remains record only part of this sequence, rather than the entire effort invested in a meal.

Fishing could require coordination as well as individual skill. Eyre’s later Murray observations describe people working together with spears and nets, adapting techniques to water levels and particular fishing places.[4] These accounts illustrate the practical importance of timing and cooperation; they do not date each technique to the ancient period. A coordinated catch also implies preparation before entering the water and work afterwards. Maintaining an implement, bringing food ashore, and preparing it for consumption all belong to the history of labour even when no separate workshop survives.

Seasonal movement was itself a practical decision about work. Wilson’s discussion suggests that fuel and protection from winter weather could influence movement towards sheltered cliffs or wooded country.[7] Relocating a camp could shorten one journey while lengthening another. Staying close to a food patch reduced carrying, but a cooking fire still required fuel and a workable place. Children’s needs and the belongings that people carried added further practical constraints. These trade-offs explain why movement cannot be reduced to following a single animal or arriving at one destination on a fixed annual date.

Social Structure

The Murray passes through the Countries of many Aboriginal peoples. Connections include Yorta Yorta and Barapa Barapa in the central river region, the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee Region farther downstream, and Ngarrindjeri in the lower reaches, Lower Lakes, and Coorong.[9] These continuing relationships give the landscape a human geography. They should not be converted into a precise map of political boundaries for 1000 BCE. The article’s long time span includes many generations, and an archaeological site cannot by itself identify all the languages or social affiliations of its occupants.

Persistent burial places offer evidence of enduring connections to particular ground. Research at Roonka, undertaken with the River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation, shows a long and changing history of use. Different people were buried there at different times; the site was not used by everybody throughout its existence. Its record belongs within a wider network of meaningful places.[10] This supports a view of communities whose movements coexisted with lasting attachments. It does not establish the size of a nearby settlement or a simple ranking of every person within it.

Later accounts also show that travel involved social arrangements. Eyre described recognised rights in country and visits arranged through invitations and messengers.[4] Such observations help explain why available food alone would not determine a journey. Moving into another community’s country involved relationships as well as knowledge of the route. For the ancient period, the exact arrangements remain unrecoverable. A useful reconstruction therefore leaves room for visits, shared activities, and obligations without inventing named offices, fixed household membership, or a uniform system of authority.

Food chemistry adds another limited perspective. A study of the later Holocene Roonka population found broadly similar carbon-isotope patterns across the sampled age and sex groups. People drew much of their food from the river and adjoining country, but the method could not distinguish access to particular foods within that environment.[11] Shared dietary sources consequently do not prove identical meals or equal social standing. Everyday cooperation and differences between people must be considered together, without asking the surviving evidence to supply a complete social census.

Tools and Technology

The clay heat retainer is a small object with a substantial role in this history. Heated clay held energy for cooking below ground, allowing food to continue cooking after the initial fire had done its work. Repeated oven use left fragments of burnt clay, ash, and charcoal. ANSTO’s account of the Calperum research explains how this technology supported the proposed processing of aquatic plants.[8] Its effectiveness depended on knowledge of materials and heat, even though the surviving pieces can look unremarkable beside more recognisable tools.

Stone and bone implements occur at Ngaut Ngaut, but the South Australian Museum notes that stone tools become scarce in the upper deposits and suggests greater reliance on wood and bone.[3] This is a reminder that durable remains form an uneven sample of a toolkit. A missing wooden implement is not evidence that its task went undone. Later records document fibre nets and other perishable equipment, providing comparisons for possible working methods while leaving their precise ancient forms uncertain.[4]

Technology also included choosing the right place to work. The Calperum survey connects oven placement with the shape and resources of the floodplain.[2] Keeping a processing place near a wetland could reduce the effort of moving bulky harvests. Clothing and Materials

Clothing is less directly visible than meals or ovens for c. 1000 BCE–500 CE. No complete wardrobe can be reconstructed from the sites discussed here. Later southeastern Australian traditions nevertheless show how animal skins could serve several household purposes. AIATSIS documents possum-skin cloaks used for warmth, night coverings, and carrying babies.[12] These uses help explain the practical value of a portable covering in river country. They remain comparisons for the ancient period, rather than evidence for an identical garment at every Murray camp.

The documented making process involved removing and scraping skins, stretching and drying them, softening them with fat, and joining them through small pierced holes using sinew. This linked clothing to hunting and to careful material preparation. AIATSIS also discusses the surviving cloak from Maiden’s Punt near Echuca, collected in 1853.[12] Its date is important: it provides a regional example of skilled manufacture, but cannot directly establish a cut, decoration, or sewing pattern for two millennia earlier.

For households moving between places, the usefulness of an object depended partly on what it could do when carried. A covering usable both during travel and at rest reduced the need for separate items. This is a practical inference, not a recoverable ancient packing list. Repairs, drying, and replacement would have required attention wherever perishable materials were used. The absence of surviving cloth or skin from a cooking deposit consequently tells us little about how warmly its users dressed or how much labour went into their belongings.

Daily life along the Murray during these centuries combined repeated use of familiar places with responses to changing water, weather, and food. Later Holocene dietary evidence from Roonka is consistent with a strong focus on river country, while leaving room for movement within it.[11] The resulting picture is of households making practical choices about where to stay, what to gather, and how to process it. Their shells, hearths, tools, and cooking mounds preserve parts of a lived landscape whose history extends well beyond this period.
