Daily life in Kerma during c. 1700 BCE

A grounded look at routines in the Nubian city near the Third Cataract, where river farming, cattle wealth, craft skill, and long-distance exchange shaped household life.

Kerma stood in Upper Nubia, in what is now northern Sudan, south of the Nile's Third Cataract and beside the broad, cultivable Kerma Basin. Around 1700 BCE it was in the early part of the Classic Kerma period, conventionally dated to about 1750–1480 BCE. These are archaeological phases based chiefly on changes in pottery and burials, not dates recorded in a local chronicle.[1] The city was the center of a powerful Nubian state at a time when its influence was extending northward as Egyptian control of Lower Nubia weakened.

No indigenous writing system is known from Kerma. Daily life must therefore be reconstructed from buildings, tools, food remains, human and animal bones, and graves; Egyptian texts provide an outside view concerned mainly with diplomacy, trade, and conflict.[1] The excavated city may itself have housed a particularly privileged, administrative, and ritual population, while farmers, herders, and smaller communities in the surrounding basin are less well documented.[2] Activities are often identifiable, but the age, gender, legal status, and family relationship of the people who performed them usually are not.

Housing and Living Spaces

Excavation shows that Kerma's houses combined mudbrick with timber, palm branches, and other perishable materials. A common plan placed two rectangular ranges on opposite sides of an inner courtyard; kitchens, silos, livestock enclosures, and domestic annexes occupied larger outer courts, whose walls could be irregular or sinuous.[2][3] This is firmer evidence than a reconstruction based only on climate: postholes, walls, hearths, storage features, and firing pits show where particular activities occurred even when roofs, doors, and furnishings have disappeared.

Houses were not uniform. Classic Kerma levels include spacious dwellings beside more modest buildings, while the western Deffufa, nearby chapels, a palace or audience complex, and the fortifications marked ceremonial and political space alongside domestic work.[3] The larger houses lay especially near routes toward the center. House size and location suggest unequal access to space, but they do not by themselves reveal the exact composition or wealth of each household.

Courtyards joined residence, storage, animal keeping, and manufacture. Excavators found kitchens and pottery-firing pits within domestic compounds, illustrating how smoke, livestock, stored grain, and repeated traffic shared limited space.[3] Mudbrick walls and roofs also required repair after erosion or fire, and storage bins had to be maintained against damp and pests. Such tasks are reasonable consequences of the excavated materials and features; details such as where people slept, how rooms were assigned, or whether roofs were routinely used for living remain uncertain.

Food and Daily Meals

Food came from the Nile floodplain, herds, fishing, and wider exchange, but the surviving evidence does not support a precise household menu. Stable-isotope analysis of people buried in the Classic Kerma cemetery indicates a long-term mixture of foods derived from C3 and C4 plants.[4] Those chemical categories cannot on their own identify particular cereals or recipes. Moreover, the sampled people came from major royal burial complexes and may have included migrants, so they cannot simply stand for everyone at Kerma. Emmer wheat and barley are attested in the wider Kerma record, but the relative place of sorghum, millet, pulses, vegetables, and gathered plants at the city around 1700 BCE remains less securely quantified.

Animal evidence is more detailed, though it accumulates material from several phases and contexts. In a published study of the city's faunal remains, domesticated species made up about 95 percent of the identified assemblage: cattle accounted for 49 percent and sheep and goats together for 44 percent, with sheep more frequent than goats.[5] Cattle supplied meat and hides and could provide milk and labor, while their horns and bodies also had major funerary importance. Their value was not static: cattle and cattle-skull offerings became less prominent in the Classic phase, possibly because of a growing population and increasingly arid conditions.[5]

Fish bones are scarce in the city deposits partly because small, fragile bones survived poorly, yet earlier human isotope work indicates that freshwater fish contributed meaningfully to diet.[5] Querns, hearths, ovens, jars, silos, and animal bones make grinding, cooking, and storage visible, but they do not show who cooked or establish a standard order of service. Food and drink placed in graves, and broken vessels from funerary meals, document ceremonial consumption; they should not be treated as a record of an ordinary supper.[2]

Work and Labor

Food production tied the city to the basin beyond its walls. Cultivation made use of the broad alluvial plain and changing Nile channels, while herding required access to water and grazing beyond the dense settlement. Sowing, harvest, fodder supply, and movement of cattle, sheep, and goats imposed seasonal demands, but no surviving Kerma account specifies labor teams, land tenure, or an irrigation timetable. Silos, grinding stones, livestock enclosures, and animal remains demonstrate the work more securely than later or modern farming analogies do.

Craft production is visible both in households and around the city's monumental center. Kerma pottery included coarse cooking and storage vessels as well as the thin-walled, highly polished black-topped red beakers associated with the Classic phase. A surviving beaker shows that these prestigious vessels were formed by hand, coated with red ochre, polished, and fired under carefully controlled oxidizing and reducing conditions to produce the red body and black top.[6] Domestic firing pits found in courtyards show that pottery manufacture was not confined to a detached specialist district, while workshops near the western Deffufa produced metal, faience, and other goods.[3][7]

Kerma also sat on routes linking Egypt, the Middle Nile, the Red Sea hinterland, and regions farther south. Egyptian objects at Kerma and Kerma vessels found in Egypt demonstrate movement in more than one direction, while seal impressions point to organized storage or administration.[3][6] Gold, ivory, ebony, hides, cattle, and precious stones appear in accounts of the exchange network, but the exact route and status of any individual object may be uncertain.[1] Excavated harbor and warehouse buildings are clearest for later Classic and Final Kerma, around 1600 BCE and after, so they should not be projected unchanged back to 1700 BCE.

Social Structure

Kerma society was markedly hierarchical, although different evidence reveals different parts of that hierarchy. The eastern cemetery contains burials ranging from modest graves to enormous royal tumuli in which people were killed to accompany elite dead, a stark display of power and inequality.[2] In the city, houses varied in size and access to central routes, but domestic architecture does not map neatly onto the extreme differences seen in the cemetery. The settlement's differentiated quarters, palace, religious complex, and sealings nevertheless imply organized authority and control over labor and stores.[2][3]

Cattle connected subsistence, wealth, and ritual. Herds required grazing, water, and labor; cattle skulls placed around burial mounds made livestock a public statement about the deceased and the community able to provide them.[5] Imported vessels and locally made prestige pottery likewise marked access to exchange and skilled production. Yet grave wealth is selected for funerary purposes, not a complete inventory of possessions in life, and it cannot reveal every resident's rank or access to food.

The archaeological record is especially weak on the division of work by gender, age, or legal status. Querns, ovens, kilns, animal pens, and building tools identify tasks, but seldom the people who used them. Kerma's lack of local written records means there are no household lists, contracts, or personal accounts from which to reconstruct marriage rules, inheritance, childhood training, or named occupations. It is therefore safer to describe a flexible household and institutional labor force than to assign cooking and weaving to women or herding and transport to men. Coercion is clearest in the people killed for some elite burials; whether other forms of servitude existed, and how they were organized in daily life, is much harder to establish.

Tools and Technology

Kerma's everyday technology relied heavily on materials that preserve unevenly. Grinding stones, fired pottery, hearths, ovens, brick walls, and metal or stone objects survive readily; wood, plant fiber, leather, food, and cloth usually appear only in unusually dry or sealed contexts. This survival bias makes the stone-and-ceramic tool kit look more complete than it was. Querns processed grain, ceramic vessels held and heated liquids and food, silos stored crops, and leather, basketry, rope, and timber supplied containers, bindings, roofing, and fittings.

Pottery was one of Kerma's most accomplished technologies, but fine beakers should not stand for all vessels. Their hand-forming, polishing, and controlled firing demanded considerable skill, while coarser wares met cooking and storage needs.[6] Building also linked specialist knowledge to routine maintenance. Monumental mudbrick and fired-brick facings required organized material and labor, but the same broad building tradition served houses, silos, ovens, and enclosure walls. In the Classic phase, fired brick was used especially to strengthen parts of the fortifications.[3]

Boats and overland transport were essential to Kerma's exchange network, although much of their perishable equipment has vanished. Containers, sealings, and the placement of storage and harbor facilities provide more direct evidence for handling goods than imagined lists of porters or market sellers.[3] Repair is often difficult to identify object by object, but rebuilt courtyard walls, altered houses, successive hearths, and long-lived monumental structures show that maintenance and remodeling were persistent forms of work.

Clothing and Materials

Dry cemetery conditions preserve unusual evidence for dress: linen or other plant-fiber cloth, leather skirts, caps, sandals, belts, and beaded or mica-decorated leatherwork were recorded in the early excavations.[8] Those finds prove that Kerma clothing was not limited to a single fiber or form. They do not establish one standard costume, however, and garments selected for burial—especially in major tumuli—may differ from clothing worn for field, workshop, or household labor.

Leather came from cattle, sheep, or goats and was also made into covers, bags, thongs, and scabbards. Textile fiber may have included flax, but the early excavator's assumption that it was grown locally was not demonstrated; cloth could also move through exchange.[8] Spinning, weaving, hide preparation, stitching, and repair all required skill, yet the evidence does not securely assign those stages to particular genders or to household rather than specialist production.

Adornment is better represented than plain work clothing because beads, stone, shell, faience, ivory, and metal survive and because graves were deliberately furnished. Necklaces, bracelets, hair or cap ornaments, and decorated leather could communicate identity, affiliation, protection, or status, but their exact meanings are rarely recoverable. Differences in material and workmanship show unequal access to labor and exchange; they should not be turned into a simple dress code for social ranks.

Daily life in Kerma around 1700 BCE joined a fortified political and ritual center to cultivation, herding, fishing, craft production, storage, and exchange across the Kerma Basin. Excavated houses and workshops reveal repeated material tasks; cemetery deposits reveal diet, dress, ritual, and sharp inequality, but through the selective lens of burial. Together they show a locally rooted Nubian city whose residents sustained a growing state, while leaving many personal routines and social identities beyond confident reconstruction.
