Daily life in Merv during c. 200 BCE-200 CE

A grounded look at a Central Asian oasis, where irrigation, fortifications, regional routes, farming, craft, and imperial frontiers shaped daily life.

Merv occupied the eastern side of the Murghab oasis in present-day Turkmenistan. The older stronghold now called Erk Kala formed the citadel of Gyaur Kala, an almost square walled city about 2 kilometres on each side. This page begins after the Seleucid rebuilding traditionally associated with Antiochus I and spans the transition from late Hellenistic to Parthian rule. Archaeologists conventionally place Parthian Merv between the second century BCE and the third century CE, but individual layers are often difficult to date closely.[1][2]

The evidence is uneven. Parthian occupation has been reached at least ten points in Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala, but mostly in narrow soundings. Mudbrick decay and reuse created secondary deposits containing pottery of mixed dates. Coins, inscribed sherds, buildings, and workshop debris reveal particular activities, not a census or a complete picture of ordinary households.[2]

Housing and Living Spaces

Sun-dried mudbrick was the dominant building material, but the surviving evidence does not justify assigning one courtyard plan to all homes. The only substantial Parthian-period structures yet published from Gyaur Kala came from Trench 2; excavators interpreted them as a metalworking complex rather than a representative house. A plaster capital with acanthus leaves and a female head, dated stylistically to the first or second century CE, shows that at least one part of this complex had decorated architecture.[2]

Elsewhere, occupation occurred along the city's central north-south axis and on mounds in its north-eastern quarter. The earthen walls were rebuilt in several phases whose dating combines architectural parallels, coins, small finds, and pottery.[3] Gates and walls channelled movement, but do not show whether most people lived inside Gyaur Kala, in suburbs, or among oasis settlements.

Food and Daily Meals

Merv's food supply depended on the Murghab and canals carrying water into otherwise arid land. Landscape research associates Gyaur Kala's growth with an enlarged cultivated area and changes to the oasis's irrigation system.[1][4] Clearing channels, allocating water, tending fields, and storing produce connected rural work to urban meals. Access varied with location, season, and control of land and labour.

Published pottery offers firmer evidence for handling food than for its ingredients. Assemblages include bowls, coarse cooking jars, small single-handled vessels, and, in the first centuries CE, double-handled jars with conical necks. Changes in these forms may reflect changing ways of serving, drinking, or storage, but redeposited sherds make the sequence uncertain.[2][5] Securely dated local evidence does not yet support a detailed list of grains, fruits, dairy products, and meats or the reconstruction of a “usual meal.”

Work and Labor

The clearest specialised workplace is the Trench 2 complex, dated by its excavator from the first century BCE into the first and second centuries CE. Furnaces, copper and iron slag, and iron blooms support metalworking there, although the evidence does not establish the scale of production or whether every stage took place on site.[2][6] Potters supplied large quantities of utilitarian vessels, while building and repairing mudbrick walls and irrigation works demanded recurring labour.

Merv's position connected routes west towards Serakhs and east towards Amul and the Oxus. Pottery parallels with north-eastern Iran and Bactria show regional contacts, but do not identify the carriers or prove a permanent workforce of innkeepers, guards, and translators.[1][5] Cultivators, transport workers, craftspeople, officials, and soldiers are plausible parts of an oasis capital's workforce; their numbers, pay, and legal standing remain unknown.

Social Structure

Local coin issues began in the Parthian period, while coins, bullae, ostraca, and writing on ceramic vessels expose parts of Merv's administrative and economic life.[2] They make authorities, minting, and literate transactions more visible than people whose work left no writing. Fortifications and a decorated workshop building also imply unequal command of resources, but archaeology cannot turn those differences into a complete ladder of social classes.

Access to irrigated land, urban property, official connections, specialist skills, and transport animals probably affected security and status. Gender, age, dependency, and residence also shaped work and consumption, though the evidence rarely isolates them. The presence or proportion of servants and enslaved people is not established for Merv in this period.

Tools and Technology

Canals sustained cultivation across the oasis, while thick mudbrick fortifications protected and defined Gyaur Kala. At household and workshop scale, ceramic vessels, furnaces, metal blooms, slag, coins, seals, and inscribed sherds survive.[2][3][6] Baskets, ropes, wooden tools, and textiles may have been common, but organic materials are far less visible and require a dated context.

Clothing and Materials

The published evidence used here does not include a securely dated textile assemblage, so wool, linen, cotton, felt, and imported fabric cannot all be assigned confidently to inhabitants between 200 BCE and 200 CE. Terracotta figurines from Margiana include women holding mirrors, with the type most common in late Parthian and early Sasanian contexts.[7] Such images can preserve conventions of dress, ornament, and self-presentation, but they may depict deities or idealised figures and are not a wardrobe record for women generally. Differences in wealth, work, and mobility almost certainly affected clothing, while exact fibres and garment combinations remain uncertain.

Daily life at Merv was consequently tied to the maintenance of an irrigated landscape and a large fortified city. The most defensible reconstruction joins cultivators and water management to pottery use, metalworking, administration, transport, and defence, while recognising that excavated workshops and official objects reveal only portions of a socially varied oasis population.
