Daily life in coastal southern Scandinavia during the Ertebolle period
A grounded look at Late Mesolithic communities around Denmark, southern Sweden, and northern Germany, where shorelines, shell middens, fishing, pottery, and forest hunting shaped everyday life.
Ertebolle coastal foragers lived roughly between 5400 and 4000 BCE. These dates mark an archaeological period, not a simultaneous change in every coastal community. In Denmark this followed the Kongemose culture; farming associated with the Funnelbeaker tradition subsequently spread across southern Scandinavia. Ertebolle (Ertebølle) is an archaeological label, named after a shell midden on the Limfjord, rather than the known name of a single people. Their world was one of islands, fjords, lagoons, river mouths, broadleaf forests, and shifting shorelines. Archaeologists know them especially from shell middens, submerged settlements, bone and antler tools, pottery, wooden paddles, dugout boats, and graves. Their subsistence relied on wild resources, although southern communities had contact with agricultural neighbors. Pottery belongs to the later part of this long period, not its beginning. Daily life remained centered on fishing, hunting, gathering, woodworking, food processing, movement by water, and the maintenance of household and kin networks.
Housing and Living Spaces
Ertebolle living spaces were closely tied to shorelines. Settlements stood on beaches, promontories, low islands, fjord edges, estuaries, river mouths, and sheltered bays where access to fishing grounds could be combined with woodland resources and fresh water. Some camps were used seasonally, while others appear to have been returned to again and again over many years. Large shell middens were not simply heaps of discarded oyster, mussel, and cockle shells. They contain evidence of food processing, hearths, and discarded tools, accumulated over repeated occupations; their size does not directly reveal how many people lived there at once.
Houses were probably light structures using timber and other perishable materials, but their exact forms and coverings are difficult to reconstruct. Organic materials rarely survive on dry sites, while erosion can remove the occupation surfaces of submerged sites. Many tasks likely took place outside shelters: hearths and concentrations of food refuse or manufacturing debris help archaeologists locate activity, but do not necessarily identify a separate household or a permanent working area.
Storage would have helped manage seasonal abundance. Fish catches and autumn nut gathering created opportunities to retain food for later use, although the scale of storage and the methods of preserving fish remain uncertain at many sites. Perishable bags and containers are plausible, but raised stores and a standard set of household storage facilities cannot be assumed. Dogs were present in Mesolithic communities; their precise roles in individual camps are harder to establish.
Some Ertebolle sites now lie underwater because postglacial shorelines changed. Submerged settlements such as Tybrind Vig preserve wooden tools, paddles, dugouts, textiles, and other materials usually lost on land. These waterlogged finds show that domestic life was richer in perishable technology than stone tools alone suggest. These finds do not preserve an entire settlement unchanged.
At Tybrind Vig, on western Fyn, Torben Malm’s excavation account distinguishes the eroded habitation surface from thick offshore refuse deposits. Wood and fiber survived particularly well in the waterlogged mud where objects had been discarded. The evidence therefore gives a much fuller picture of boats and equipment than of roofs or room arrangements. Changing sea level also means that a site’s present distance from land is no guide to how far its inhabitants walked between their shelters and the water.
Food and Daily Meals
Food came from water, forest, and seasonal plant gathering. Fish were central. Ertebolle communities took eel, cod, pike, perch, flatfish, herring, whitefish, and other species depending on local waters. Fishing used traps, weirs, hooks, leisters, spears, nets, and boats, allowing people to work shallow bays, channels, lakes, and river mouths. Shellfish were abundant in many coastal areas, especially oysters, mussels, cockles, and periwinkles. Shell middens preserve the remains of repeated meals and food processing, but they also reflect labor: gathering, carrying, opening, cooking, and discarding. Drying or smoking catches could have extended their usefulness, but shell heaps alone cannot establish those practices.
Marine mammals and birds supplemented fish and shellfish. Seals, small cetaceans, and waterfowl occur in the coastal food economy, although their importance varied locally. Forest hunting supplied animals such as red deer, roe deer, and wild boar. Deer were especially useful because a carcass provided meat as well as hides, antler, sinew, and bone for further work. Animal remains demonstrate exploitation more securely than they reveal the precise hunting method or how meat was distributed.
Plant foods broadened the diet. At Tybrind Vig, Lucyna Kubiak-Martens identified charred hazelnut shells, acorn tissue, and sea beet roots. These are firmer evidence of plant use than the mere presence of an edible species near a settlement. Waterlogged seeds and fruits show that other resources, including berries and crab apples, were available, but some may have entered the deposits naturally. Gathering roots and nuts involved different tasks from fishing, and their seasonal availability broadened the work needed to obtain food.
Courel and colleagues’ analysis of pottery fats supports the importance of aquatic foods at coastal Ertebolle sites, while also identifying terrestrial animal products. Pots were not used uniformly across the Baltic region. Such residues support varied cooking practices, rather than a single characteristic fish stew.
Food remains also complicate chronology. Philippsen and Meadows’ study of inland northern German sites explains how freshwater foods can make charred pot residues appear artificially old in radiocarbon dating. Those inland results are not a coastal menu, but they illustrate why dates for aquatic food crusts need checking before being used to establish when cooking vessels first appeared.
The surviving evidence does not supply a daily menu or meal timetable. Food sharing could have helped manage uneven catches and hunting success, but the rules governing portions and obligations are unknown. Pottery residues can identify some ingredients heated in vessels; they cannot show everything eaten raw, roasted directly, or prepared in containers that have disappeared.
Work and Labor
Work among Ertebolle coastal foragers was varied, seasonal, and technically skilled. Fishing required building and maintaining gear before any food was caught. Fish fences required wooden stakes to be cut, carried, and set in shallow water, with further work when parts loosened or broke. Traps and cordage required the preparation and shaping of plant materials; maintaining them added work beyond the time spent catching fish. Hooks, harpoon heads, leister prongs, and spear shafts had to be carved, polished, hafted, and replaced. Boats needed hollowing, scraping, patching, fire management, paddles, landing places, and people who knew currents and weather.
Hunting work extended inland. Tracking red deer or wild boar required knowledge of paths, seasonal behavior, wind direction, and group coordination. After a kill, the labor continued: butchering, carrying meat, scraping hides, splitting bones for marrow and saving antler or bone for tools. Drying meat and preparing sinew for thread are plausible further uses, rather than a sequence documented for every kill. Smaller animals supplied fur and useful bones; the equipment used to catch them is less securely known than their presence in the animal remains. Birding, egg collection, and seal hunting tied work to breeding seasons and coastal weather.
Gathering was not casual background activity. Hazelnut harvests, berry collecting, root digging, fuel gathering, reed cutting, clay collection, and shellfish work were planned tasks. Children probably learned practical skills through participation and observation, but finds rarely allow tasks to be assigned securely by age or gender. Experience would have mattered in choosing materials and recognizing seasonal opportunities; particular responsibilities for children or older adults remain reconstructions.
Craft production was part of daily labor. Flint knapping produced blades, scrapers, axes, borers, and arrowheads. Bone, antler, wood, bark, hide, and fiber supplied much of the everyday toolkit. Pottery required clay selection, tempering, coiling, shaping, decorating, drying, and firing in open conditions. People likely had recognized skills, but the finds do not establish a set of specialist occupations.
Social Structure
Ertebolle settlements and graves suggest communities organized on a small scale, although household membership, kinship rules, and authority cannot be reconstructed precisely. The archaeological record does not show palaces, temples, or sharp class divisions, but it does show durable places, repeated settlement, cemeteries, ornaments, exchange items, and differences in burial treatment. Differences in burial treatment need not translate directly into economic rank, and the absence of palaces does not establish social equality.
Households probably formed the core of everyday life. Sharing hearths, food preparation, child care, and repair tasks is a reasonable reconstruction, although the composition of these groups remains uncertain. Several households could occupy a coastal site together, cooperating when labor was too heavy for one family: building fish weirs, hauling boats, processing large catches, repairing shelters, moving camp, or preparing a burial. Cooperation did not remove conflict or competition. Productive fishing places, shellfish beds, raw materials, and marriage partnerships all had social value.
Networks reached beyond any single camp. Imported stone axes and occasional farmer-made pottery attest to contacts with communities farther south. Claims for domestic foodstuffs require more care. Krause-Kyora and colleagues identified some northern German Ertebolle pig remains as domestic using DNA and tooth analysis; later scholarship has disputed that interpretation. Even the original study left open whether animals were exchanged or captured after escaping. These finds should not be generalized into pig keeping throughout Denmark and southern Sweden, or treated as proof of cereal cultivation.
Burials show considerable variation even within one locality. At Gøngehusvej, Vedbæk, the National Museum records cremations and unburned bodies, single and double graves, children’s burials, and a dog burial. Some people received objects while others did not. Such differences show deliberate choices in treating the dead, but do not by themselves identify family relationships, an ancestor cult, or fixed social ranks. Cemeteries also represent only those whose bodies were deposited and preserved there, rather than a complete record of everyone who used the coast.
Tools and Technology
Ertebolle technology combined stone, bone, antler, wood, clay, hide, and fiber. Flint blades, scrapers, borers, knives, axes, and arrowheads handled cutting, scraping, woodworking, hunting, and tool repair. Bone and antler were shaped into harpoons, leister prongs, points, awls, fishhooks, pins, and handles. Wood was essential for boats, paddles, shafts, bowls, stakes, traps, fish fences, digging sticks, frames, and shelters, though it survives mostly at waterlogged sites.
Fishing technology was especially important. Fish weirs and traps turned shallow water into managed working space. Dugout boats made islands, bays, and inlets part of the everyday landscape rather than barriers. Paddles from Tybrind Vig show that even functional objects could be carefully shaped and sometimes decorated. Some dugouts contain clay-and-sand settings for fires. The National Museum interprets these as possible equipment for attracting eels during night fishing; the fire setting survives, while its exact use is inferred.
Pottery is distinctive of later Ertebolle communities: Courel and colleagues place its adoption at Grube-Rosenhof in northern Germany around 4600 BCE. It should not be projected back to 5400 BCE. Vessels were built by hand from local clay, mixed with temper and fired. Pointed or rounded bases helped pots stand in sand or soft ground, and small lamps or bowls may have held fat, oil, or prepared food. These tools did not replace older technologies. They added new options to a strong Mesolithic toolkit already built around water, forest, and skilled repair.
Clothing and Materials
Clothing had to suit damp shorelines, cold seasons, boat travel, and movement through forest. Skins and furs were available, but a standard outfit of cloaks, leggings, or footwear cannot be recovered from the evidence. Tybrind Vig’s plant-fiber textiles, dated by the National Museum to about 4200 BCE, show looped textile work rather than securely identified woven garments. Their proposed uses include carrying nets; their survival does not establish that people wore cloth of this kind.
Making skin clothing would have required many linked tasks. Hides needed cleaning, scraping, and softening before use, with cutting and fastening depending on the intended object. Bone awls, needles or pins, sinew, plant fibers, and leather thongs supported sewing and fastening. Furs from marten, fox, otter, badger, beaver, or other animals may have provided warmth and exchange value. The exact treatments used to make garments weather-resistant are uncertain.
A grave at Vedbæk dated to about 5000 BCE offers more specific, though indirect, evidence. Small roe deer foot bones on a woman’s chest have been interpreted as remnants of a skin sling; a grebe’s beak near her head may derive from a bird-skin cap. Two bone knives lay at her chest. The National Museum connects these with skin working. The positions of the remains support these interpretations, but neither a complete sling nor a cap survives, and one burial cannot establish everyday dress for the whole population.
Personal appearance also carried meaning. Amber pieces, animal teeth, shells, bone ornaments, decorated paddles, and worked antler objects suggest that identity was visible in materials worn or carried. Clothing was therefore practical and social at once. Decorated tools and ornaments show attention to appearance, although their particular meanings and associations are not recoverable with certainty.
Daily life in coastal southern Scandinavia during the Ertebolle period was shaped by a close knowledge of water, forest, and seasonal abundance. These communities made a durable living from fishing, hunting, gathering, pottery, woodworking, boats, and social cooperation. Their shell middens and submerged settlements show a world that was mobile but not rootless, technically sophisticated but mostly built from perishable materials, and deeply connected to the changing coasts of Late Mesolithic northern Europe.
