Daily life in Catalhoyuk (c. 7,100-6,000 BCE)
A grounded look at one of Anatolia's best-known Neolithic settlements, where dense mudbrick housing, farming, herding, craft, and ritual filled everyday life.
Catalhoyuk (Çatalhöyük) was a large Neolithic settlement on the Konya Plain of central Anatolia, in present-day Turkey. This account concerns the East Mound, dated to about 7,100-5,950 BCE in the studies by Larsen and colleagues and Yüncü and colleagues listed below; the title rounds its end date. The neighboring West Mound chiefly represents later, Chalcolithic occupation. For more than a thousand years, its residents built mudbrick houses against one another, cultivated cereals and pulses, herded animals, hunted, and made a wide range of tools and ornaments. The settlement changed repeatedly, so its excavated layers record many generations rather than one frozen community.
Housing and Living Spaces
Most houses had no ground-level front door. People probably climbed ladders and entered through an opening in the roof, which also vented smoke from the hearth and oven. A main room contained raised platforms, benches, bins, and carefully plastered walls; smaller side rooms provided storage and work space. Roofs likely formed routes between adjoining buildings and open areas.
Maintaining a house was continual labor. Residents mixed earth and plant material for bricks, replastered walls and floors, cleared hearths, and eventually demolished or filled old rooms. New houses were sometimes built above earlier ones with similar layouts. This repeated building created the mound and maintained a connection to place, but it does not mean that every house belonged to one biological family.
Keeping interiors orderly did not remove the difficulties of living beside waste. Larsen and colleagues describe floors with little visible debris, repeatedly renewed with pale, lime-rich silty clay, alongside microscopic evidence of human and animal fecal material. Refuse areas and animal pens lay close to houses. This combination suggests regular domestic cleaning but continuing exposure to waste around the home; a swept floor alone cannot establish how healthy a household was.
Food and Daily Meals
People grew wheat, barley, peas, lentils, and other crops in the surrounding landscape. Sheep predominated among the domestic livestock, with goats also supplying meat and other resources. Wild cattle were hunted; domestic cattle became part of the economy later in the occupation, so cattle remains should not all be treated as evidence of herding. Nuts, fruits, and wetland plants added seasonal foods. The balance varied through time as residents responded to soils, water, grazing needs, and changes in the settlement's population.
Turning these resources into meals required repeated labor. Grain had to be harvested, threshed, winnowed, ground, mixed, and cooked; animal carcasses required butchery and distribution. Grinding stones, ovens, hearths, storage bins, and plant remains reveal different stages of this work. Shared ingredients do not tell us exactly who cooked, but wear on bodies and tools shows how physically demanding repeated household tasks could be.
A storage find makes that work unusually tangible. In her 1996 botanical report, Christine Hastorf described a bin in the North Area containing a dense layer of charred lentils, with very little chaff or other plant material mixed in. She interpreted these as cleaned seeds ready for cooking. The deposit shows preparation completed before storage and food kept inside a house, without revealing portion sizes or who controlled the supply. Its survival also matters: burning preserved this particular store, whereas foods eaten, carried away, or left to decay are less visible. Excavated plant quantities are therefore not a direct measure of the ingredients in an everyday meal.
Work and Labor
Work included tending fields and herds away from the mound, fetching water, gathering reeds and fuel, disposing of refuse, plastering rooms, repairing tools, and caring for children. Hunters pursued wild cattle and other animals. The dense settlement depended on cooperation because rooftop movement, smoke, building repairs, and access to shared spaces affected neighbors.
Craft was woven into ordinary life. Residents knapped obsidian, shaped bone, worked hides, made baskets and mats, formed clay objects, and produced beads. Some people were especially skilled, but the distribution of tools suggests that many households practiced several crafts. Obsidian from central Anatolian sources also connected Catalhoyuk to exchange networks beyond the plain.
Social Structure and Belief
Households were important social units, yet burials complicate a simple family model. Selected people were interred beneath platforms and floors, sometimes after earlier remains had been disturbed or revisited. The 2025 ancient-DNA study by Yüncü and colleagues, drawing on 131 ancient genomes, found that people buried together in early phases were frequently close genetic relatives; in later phases they were often unrelated. Where genetic connections within buildings could be traced, maternal lines predominated across the sequence. These are patterns among the sampled dead, not a census of people living together at one moment, and they do not by themselves establish who governed the settlement. Houses may therefore have gathered social groups through residence, memory, work, and ritual as well as descent, with the balance changing over time.
Wall paintings, modeled plaster features, animal horns, figurines, and special deposits made symbolism part of inhabited rooms. Not every decorated building was a separate shrine; cooking, sleeping, craft, burial, and ritual could occur within the same domestic setting. There is variation among houses, but no palace, royal tomb, or administrative center demonstrates a ruling state.
Tools, Clothing, and Materials
Sharp obsidian blades served cutting and harvesting, while ground stone axes, grinders, bone points, awls, wooden implements, and clay vessels supported other tasks. Basketry and wooden containers may initially have been more common than pottery. Fire cooked food and hardened clay objects, but smoke and indoor soot also made ventilation and cleaning necessary.
Fragments and impressions show that people twisted fibers and made cord, matting, baskets, and textiles. Hide working suggests leather or skins also supplied equipment and probably clothing, although complete outfits cannot be reconstructed. Beads of stone, shell, bone, and clay, together with pigments and pendants, let people alter their appearance. Such objects could communicate age, affiliation, achievement, or occasion, although their precise meanings cannot be recovered.
Surviving cloth provides a more specific view of fiber work. Microscopic analysis published by Rast-Eicher, Karg, and Bender Jørgensen in 2021 identified oak bast, the fibrous inner bark, in textiles previously described as flax. A separate 2023 study by Loudon, Wollstonecroft, and Fuller supported tree-bast use and suggested elm and willow or poplar among the materials. Its fragments date to the East Mound's middle phase, about 6,700-6,500 BCE, and include woven burial textiles and cordage. They connect textile production to knowledge of local trees and the work of preparing and joining fibers. Burial cloth demonstrates weaving skills and funerary use; it does not show that everyone wore the same material or style.
Daily life in Catalhoyuk was intensely domestic without being confined indoors. Fields, grazing land, wetlands, and exchange routes sustained a crowded settlement in which food, craft, memory, burial, and imagery accumulated house by house.
