Daily life among Afanasievo steppe pastoralists (c. 3,300-2,500 BCE)
A grounded look at early herding communities of the Altai-Sayan region, Middle Yenisei, Dzungaria, and western and central Mongolia, reconstructed from scarce settlements, human and animal remains, pottery, tools, and stone-marked cemeteries.
“Afanasievo” is an archaeological label for related burial practices and material culture found across a very large part of southern Siberia and Inner Asia; it should not be taken to mean that every community had an identical economy or identity. Scholars variously describe this horizon as Eneolithic, Copper Age, or Early Bronze Age. The broad date range c. 3,300-2,500 BCE also combines different regional chronologies. Refined radiocarbon work places the main Altai burial series in roughly the thirty-first to twenty-ninth centuries BCE and the Middle Yenisei series in the twenty-ninth to twenty-fifth centuries BCE. Afanasievo-type sites in Mongolia and Dzungaria fall mainly within the early third millennium BCE.
Domestic sheep, ruminant milk proteins, pottery, stone tools, and occasional copper objects provide firm evidence for an early herding component. Animal remains also include cattle or other bovines, caprines, equids, and wild species, but identification and importance differ by site. Ancient genomes connect sampled Afanasievo individuals closely with Yamnaya-related populations far to the west, showing that long-distance human movement helped form this horizon. Genetics does not, however, supply the language, occupation, or daily routine of any individual. Those aspects must be reconstructed from a burial-heavy and geographically uneven archaeological record.
Housing and Living Spaces
Afanasievo habitation sites are much rarer and less thoroughly investigated than cemeteries. Nizhnyaya Sooru, on a river terrace in the central Altai, is especially important because domesticated sheep dated to c. 3,300-2,900 BCE occur with Afanasievo pottery and a varied stone industry. Yet the initial excavation covered only 2.4 square metres, and erosion has damaged the deposits. It does not preserve a complete dwelling from which wall materials, roof form, sleeping arrangements, or camp layout can safely be reconstructed.
Some degree of movement between grazing areas is consistent with an economy using domestic herds in mountain valleys, but “mobile pastoralism” covered many possible arrangements. Families could revisit the same sheltered place, move stock without moving every member of a household, or combine herding with hunting and gathering. Water, winter forage, and snow cover would have constrained where people and animals could remain; the precise routes and seasons are not known. Hearths, pottery, stone-working debris, and animal bone at the few settlements show food preparation and tool work, but not the portable tents, felt furnishings, storage furniture, or fixed activity zones sometimes supplied by analogy with much later pastoralists.
Cemeteries are more visible. Depending on region, graves could lie beneath low stone mounds or flat stone platforms bounded by upright stones. Bodies were commonly placed on the back with flexed legs; head direction varied, and red ochre and egg-shaped, often pointed-bottomed pots recur in some groups. These repeated practices made burial places durable features in landscapes otherwise poorly represented by settlement remains. They show substantial labour invested in the dead, but do not by themselves prove that each enclosure belonged to a biological family or marked exclusive pasture.
Food and Daily Meals
Food did depend heavily on animals, but the evidence is more precise than a generic pastoral menu. Mitochondrial DNA identified all five tested sheep teeth from Nizhnyaya Sooru as domestic sheep. A stable-isotope study of 20 Afanasievo people from 13 Altai sites found a diet based on C3 food webs—the temperate plants common in the region and the animals that ate them—with a strong contribution from animal protein. It found little sign of routine fish consumption in this sample, even though fish bones, scales, and freshwater shells at some Middle Yenisei sites show that aquatic foods mattered elsewhere. This is a useful warning against treating the Altai, Yenisei, Mongolia, and Dzungaria as one food zone.
Dairying is directly attested, but recipes are not. Milk proteins preserved in the dental calculus of an individual from Shatar Chuluu in central Mongolia show consumption of sheep and/or bovine dairy around 3,300-2,900 BCE. At the Narensu cemetery in the eastern Dzhungar Mountains, a 2026 study likewise detected ruminant dairy in people assigned to the Afanasievo horizon from about 3,050 BCE. These proteins establish consumption; they cannot distinguish fresh milk from curds, fermented drinks, butter, or a particular household’s normal meal.
Plant use also varied. No cereal remains or associated cultivation tools had been identified at the Altai sites included in the 2017 dietary study, although the authors noted that soil flotation had not been carried out and grinding stones could have processed wild plants or pigments. At Narensu, early Afanasievo individuals initially had a mainly C3 diet, while later individuals developed a clear C4-food signal—a chemical signature consistent with millet—around 2,900 BCE. Pottery made boiling and liquid handling possible, but no residue study yet justifies assigning stews, broths, or specific preserved foods to Afanasievo vessels as a whole.
Work and Labor
Herding required repeated observation and decisions about water, forage, births, culling, and the separation or movement of animals. Milking is directly supported at Shatar Chuluu and Narensu, while slaughter and carcass processing are indicated by animal remains at settlements and meat portions placed in some graves. Hunting continued alongside stock keeping. The age, gender, and status of the people who carried out each task cannot normally be recovered, so a fixed division in which children tended small stock or particular adults controlled routes would go beyond the evidence.
Wheeled transport needs similar care. Some Mongolian Afanasievo burials contained objects interpreted as parts of dismantled carts, evidence that traction technology was known in at least those communities. It does not show how often carts were used, what they normally carried, or whether every household owned one. Nor is there direct evidence for Afanasievo mounted herding; in Mongolia, secure evidence for horse-centred diet and riding becomes prominent much later in the Bronze Age. Equid bones in an Afanasievo context can indicate meat use or contact with horses or wild equids without identifying riding.
Material work is visible in pottery sherds, diverse flaked and ground stone, bone implements, and rare metal objects. Making and repairing vessels and cutting tools, processing carcasses, and maintaining whatever organic containers or coverings were used would have occupied time alongside herd care. Metal finds establish access to copper-based technology and valued materials, but they do not show that smelting occurred in every camp or that metal replaced stone and bone in everyday work.
Funerary labour is unusually clear. People dug pits, transported and laid stone, prepared bodies with ochre in some regions, and arranged pots or animal portions with the dead. This work was intermittent rather than daily, but it demonstrates cooperation and knowledge of remembered places more securely than a reconstructed timetable can.
Social Structure
Afanasievo society is known chiefly through graves, and mortuary treatment is not a transparent map of life among the living. Single, paired, and multiple burials include adults and children, sometimes within stone enclosures used more than once. These patterns are compatible with small household or kin-based groups, but only ancient DNA can establish biological relationships in particular cases. A cemetery’s repeated use demonstrates continuity of practice and place, not a named lineage or formal claim to surrounding land.
Most graves contain few goods; a smaller number contain copper, gold, or silver ornaments, stone objects, pottery, or unusual wooden vessels with metal fittings. Such differences may relate to age, gender, role, occasion, or social standing. They do not yet support a detailed hierarchy of chiefs, specialist priests, and dependent households. Herd ownership probably affected security and influence in a pastoral economy, but herd sizes are not preserved and should not be read directly from funerary wealth.
Ancient DNA supplies a different kind of social evidence. Sampled Afanasievo people are closely related genetically to Yamnaya groups of the Pontic-Caspian steppe, consistent with long-distance migration over thousands of kilometres. Research in the Altai and Mongolia also investigates interaction with established hunter-gatherer communities; the arrival of people, livestock, and techniques need not have produced an immediate or uniform replacement of local lifeways. Neither genomes nor grave goods reveal a universal gendered division of herding, craft, cooking, and care, so those responsibilities are best left open.
Tools and Technology
Afanasievo toolkits remained predominantly ceramic, stone, bone, antler, and perishable organic material. At Nizhnyaya Sooru, pottery and a diverse stone industry occur in direct association with dated domestic sheep. Cemeteries add ground-stone objects, bone points or awls, and the characteristic egg-shaped vessels. Vessel form is well documented, but it does not by itself identify a pot’s support or contents.
Metal objects are conspicuous because they were rare. Copper-based awls, small knives, fittings, and ornaments occur alongside occasional gold and silver pieces. Some metal fittings belonged to wooden vessels, reminding us that organic objects have largely disappeared. The assemblage shows knowledge and movement of metalworking products across a broad network, while the continuing abundance of stone tools shows that metal had not displaced older materials.
Apparent cart components from a few burials make wheeled traction plausible, but the draught animals, construction details, and normal uses are not always recoverable. It is safer to say that some groups had access to wheeled transport than to reconstruct routine wagon migrations. Pastoral knowledge itself was equally important: keeping newly introduced domesticates alive in unfamiliar mountain and steppe environments required learned decisions about forage, water, and animal reproduction.
Clothing and Materials
Clothing is one of the least securely known parts of Afanasievo daily life because skins and textiles seldom survive. Herded and hunted animals made hide, leather, sinew, and fur available, while scrapers and awls could have been used in their preparation. These materials would suit the cold and wind of the Altai and open steppe, but no preserved wardrobe supports a list of tunics, leggings, mittens, or riding clothes.
Domestic sheep do not on their own prove the production of woven wool cloth or felt. Early sheep could be valued for meat, milk, skins, or fibre in different proportions, and the Afanasievo record does not yet define the fleece, spinning, weaving, or felting sequence. Birch-bark containers and wooden vessels survive exceptionally in a few graves, illustrating how much of the organic material culture is normally lost. Clothing may likewise have been repaired and reused, but its cut and life history remain unknown.
Small ornaments of copper, gold, silver, stone, bone, and antler provide firmer evidence for appearance. Their placement in graves can document that objects were worn or deposited with particular people, but not a fixed code of age, family, or rank across the whole Afanasievo range.
Afanasievo communities helped carry domestic livestock, dairying, and western-steppe ancestry into Inner Asia, but their daily lives were neither uniform nor fully recoverable. Rare camps show herding beside older stone technologies; teeth and bones reveal animal protein, dairy, and regional food differences; graves preserve pottery, scarce metal, and repeated work with stone. The strongest reconstruction therefore combines practical pastoral demands with clear limits: mobility varied, horse riding is unproven, clothing is largely lost, and cemetery evidence cannot supply a complete household or social order.
