Daily life in Arelate during the 2nd century CE

A grounded look at Roman Arles, where river trade, workshops, markets, spectacle buildings, and households shaped daily life in southern Gaul.

Arelate, modern Arles, was a Roman colony established in 46 or 45 BCE on the Rhône in southern Gaul. By the 2nd century CE it was a long-established provincial city whose port connected Mediterranean routes with the Rhône corridor toward the Saône, Lyon, and northern provinces. Small and medium sea-going ships could reach Arles, but vessels unable to cross the shifting, shallow river mouth had to unload at coastal anchorages into craft of lesser draught. This transfer helps explain the city's quays, warehouses, markets, workshops, and mixed population. Evidence remains uneven: monuments, wealthy houses, inscriptions, and cargo containers are much more visible than rented rooms or casual laborers.

Housing and Living Spaces

Urban housing ranged from rooms attached to workshops or shops to courtyard houses with mosaics and painted plaster. Builders used stone, brick, mortar, timber, and roof tile. Wealthy owners could separate reception, dining, service, and sleeping areas; people with less space cooked, stored goods, slept, and earned money in multipurpose rooms. No single excavated plan can be treated as the city's normal arrangement.

The clearest local housing evidence comes from Trinquetaille on the right bank. Excavations at the Verrerie site identified a port and residential district with paved streets, docks, warehouses, craft activity, and at least two high-status houses. The latest extensively studied houses date from the middle or later 2nd century and had mosaics, painted walls, marble wall veneers, and ornamental basins. These remains demonstrate elite investment beside a working river district, not that most residents enjoyed such rooms. They also show how misleading the monumental center alone can be: Arelate extended across both banks, with homes close to storage and transport work.

Riverfront residence brought opportunity as well as noise, mud, refuse, flooding, and fire risk. Water reached the city by aqueduct. Recent analysis of mineral deposits inside the system and in lead pipes found under the Rhône indicates that the same supply crossed the river to Trinquetaille, probably through inverted siphons. Distribution within a neighborhood was still unequal: public fountains and baths reduced some journeys, while carrying and storing water remained household labor. Lamps extended indoor activity after sunset, but lamp oil was a consumable expense rather than unlimited light.

Food and Daily Meals

Bread, porridge, and other grain foods probably anchored many diets, supplemented in differing combinations by legumes, olives and oil, wine, vegetables, fruit, cheese, eggs, fish, and meat. Farms, vineyards, pastures, and wetlands in Arelate's extensive territory supplied the city, but neither the range of foods available nor finds from wealthy houses reveal what every household ate. Grinding, dough preparation, water carrying, fuel supply, cooking, and cleaning also made a meal the outcome of substantial, often poorly documented labor.

Amphorae and pottery discarded around the port give firmer evidence for exchange than for individual menus. The assemblages include containers for wine from several eastern and western Mediterranean regions, olive oil from Baetica and North Africa, and fish sauces or preserved fish from Iberia and North Africa; regional Gallic wine and pottery also moved downriver. Barrels, baskets, and sacks are less likely to survive, so the archaeological record overrepresents durable ceramic packaging. Cargo evidence does not show who could afford imports or justify a standard meal.

The 2nd-century watermill complex at Barbegal, about 7 kilometers from Arles, connected food processing to the same managed water landscape. Sixteen wheels arranged in two descending rows powered flour mills. Operating them required millers, maintenance of wooden flumes and millstones, and the transport of grain in and flour out; water diverted to the mills also had to be balanced against the city's supply. Its scale is clear, but its output, customers, seasonal operation, and contribution to feeding Arelate remain debated.

Work and Labor

Boat crews, haulers, porters, warehouse staff, measurers, rope makers, shipwrights, and animal drivers kept cargo moving. River transport required knowledge of channels, currents, towing, changing water levels, and suitable craft. Arles-Rhône 3, a 31-meter flat-bottomed barge, is important evidence for this working landscape but sank in the mid-1st century, several decades before the period of this page. It cannot serve as a direct snapshot of 2nd-century work. Its construction and equipment nevertheless document an established lower-Rhône boatbuilding tradition, while the wider group of Roman wrecks at Arles shows that river, river-and-sea, and maritime vessels used the port over a longer span.

Potters, smiths, builders, stonecutters, textile workers, food sellers, bath attendants, performers, and domestic servants met urban demand. Farmers and herders supplied the city from its territory. Magistrates, scribes, tax personnel, and messengers ran colonial government. Inscriptions make maritime shippers and officers of their associations relatively visible, but tell us much less about hired porters or enslaved workers. Free, freed, and enslaved people could perform similar skilled or physical tasks while possessing sharply different rights, control over earnings, and exposure to coercion.

Social Structure and Public Life

Civic office, citizenship, land, wealth, patronage, gender, age, and freedom shaped status. Elite families advertised donations and honors in inscriptions, merchants used associations and partnerships, and freedpeople could build careers while retaining obligations to former owners. Women could own property and participate in household or commercial activity under Roman law, although local inscriptions and monumental honors disproportionately record men and officeholders. Evidence for an elite woman or prosperous freedman should therefore not be generalized to every woman or former slave.

The theater and amphitheater were already established when work began on Arelate's circus in the middle of the 2nd century. Tree-ring dating shows that timbers used beneath the circus were felled in the winter of 148–149 CE. Driving tens of thousands of piles into marshy ground made the project itself a major demand for timber, transport, builders, and organized labor before it hosted chariot racing. Spectacles expressed civic generosity and hierarchy while also employing handlers, cleaners, vendors, performers, guards, and repair crews. Temples and household cults structured festivals and vows, but neither monumental capacity nor religious dedications reveal how often every resident attended.

Tools, Clothing, and Infrastructure

Boats, poles, ropes, carts, amphorae, barrels, scales, coins, tablets, lamps, looms, millstones, presses, fishing gear, and masonry tools supported work. Quays and canals were technologies as important as portable tools. Bath furnaces, aqueduct channels, drains, and sewers functioned only when workers supplied fuel, cleared sediment, and repaired damage.

The aqueduct was not a fixed achievement but a maintained and altered system. During the 2nd century one branch was redirected to the new Barbegal mills while another continued toward the city; after some decades, water from the latter was also shared with the mills. Mineral layers inside the channels preserve these changes and episodes of cleaning more securely than they preserve the daily decisions behind them. In practice, hydraulic infrastructure redistributed labor: it moved large volumes of water and powered milling, but still required inspection, desilting, repairs, and workers at fountains, baths, mills, and drains.

Tunics, cloaks, and leather footwear suited ordinary movement and work, with wool and linen varying by season, means, and intended use. Because ancient textiles rarely survive archaeologically, clothing at Arelate is reconstructed from fasteners, tools, images, and better-preserved evidence elsewhere in Roman Gaul. Boat crews and farm laborers needed garments that could be patched and cleaned; formal civic occasions allowed wealthier residents to display finer cloth, jewelry, and pins. Local preferences and empire-wide fashions overlapped rather than forming separate Roman and Gallic wardrobes.

Daily life in Arelate was shaped by transfer: between sea and river boats, countryside and market, household and public spectacle, and local traditions and imperial institutions. Its prosperity rested on strenuous transport and service work as much as on surviving monuments.
