Daily life in Liangzhu during c. 2500 BCE
A grounded look at the late phase of a lower Yangtze center, where occupied terraces, rice supplies, waterways, earthen monuments, and specialized crafts linked household work to a strongly unequal society.
Around 2500 BCE, Liangzhu City occupied a low, wet basin near modern Hangzhou in Zhejiang, within the wider lower Yangtze Liangzhu cultural area. The date matters. The ICOMOS evaluation of the site places c. 2500 BCE in a late phase, about 2600–2300 BCE: the inner city and surrounding residential terraces remained in use, but the great peripheral dam system, built centuries earlier, may already have been abandoned. This page therefore concerns life in an established and changing center, not the moment when its largest works were first constructed.
Archaeologists disagree over whether terms such as “state”, “capital”, or “palace” precisely describe Liangzhu's political institutions. There is no securely deciphered contemporary writing to name its inhabitants, offices, kin groups, taxes, or beliefs. Daily life must instead be reconstructed from settlement surfaces, waterways, plant and animal remains, tools, pottery, graves, and the uneven survival of wood and fibers. These sources document rice production, skilled manufacture, large organized works, and pronounced differences in burial wealth much more securely than they document household membership, gendered tasks, recipes, clothing styles, or a typical day's timetable.
Housing and Living Spaces
Liangzhu's housing cannot be reduced to one house type. Artificial oblong terraces such as Bianjiashan, Meirendi, Biandanshan, and Heshangdi carried residential and burial areas around the inner city. Excavation at Bianjiashan has also revealed ditches and wharf remains. Postholes, packed surfaces, pottery, drains, and refuse identify places where people lived and worked, but most roofs, walling, partitions, baskets, mats, and wooden fittings have decayed. The remains do not justify assigning fixed “kitchens”, bedrooms, or standard family sizes to every dwelling.
The contrast with the center was substantial. Mojiaoshan was a roughly 30-hectare artificial platform bearing formal foundations; Wang and colleagues calculate that its construction incorporated about 2.28 million cubic meters of moved earth. Calling every foundation a residence would be misleading, since assembly, storage, ritual, and the direction of work are also possible functions. Whatever happened on top, raising and maintaining such surfaces demanded labor and materials on a scale far beyond a single household.
Water structured movement as well as building. Archaeological surveys identify piers and at least 51 artificial and natural canals or ditches within and around the city. These features made movement by water plausible and placed homes close to landing places, banks, and drainage, although they do not reveal how often a particular resident used a boat. Living on made ground reduced exposure to saturated soils; keeping paths, banks, floor surfaces, and stored goods usable after rain would still have been recurrent work. The surviving layout thus shows a water-connected settlement more securely than it shows the furnishings or routines of an “ordinary” home.
Food and Daily Meals
Rice agriculture formed the food system's base, but the archaeological record is not a menu. A storage feature at eastern Mojiaoshan, about 600–700 square meters in area, contained an estimated 10–15 metric tons of preserved rice; it may originally have held more. A well-preserved Liangzhu-period paddy landscape of about 80 hectares at Maoshan, outside the city, illustrates the field systems that could supply large settlements. These finds imply harvesting, drying, transporting, storing, and processing grain, but neither identifies the owner of the crop, the mechanism by which it reached the center, or whether a resident ate boiled rice, gruel, or another preparation on a given day.
Animal bones and isotope results make the diet broader but not uniform. A 2024 synthesis found that nine sampled people from Meirendi had diets based on C3 foods, consistent in this setting with substantial rice consumption, and relatively high nitrogen values indicating animal or aquatic protein. Pigs dominate many Liangzhu-period assemblages in the inland core, while freshwater animals and some wild mammals are also represented. Coastal and peripheral communities relied more heavily on fishing, hunting, or gathering at some sites. Evidence from the wider cultural area should therefore not be turned into one diet for every resident of Liangzhu City.
Pottery vessels and processing tools show repeated work with food and liquids, not exact recipes or portions. Grain required threshing or separation, drying, husking, and cooking; vessels, fuel, and clean water had to be brought together, while humid conditions made bulk storage vulnerable to spoilage. The Mojiaoshan rice concentration demonstrates surplus at a central place, but it does not prove tribute, markets, equal rations, or regular elite feasts. Burial wealth establishes social inequality more directly than food remains establish who received particular cuts of meat.
Work and Labor
Rice cultivation was seasonal and labor-intensive. Paddy fields required water control, planting or transplanting, weeding, harvest, drying, and processing. Field boundaries and channels made some cooperation unavoidable, yet archaeology does not tell us whether land was controlled by households, communities, or institutions, or whether the central rice store was filled through dues, exchange, collective provisioning, or another arrangement. The work can be reconstructed from fields, crop remains, and tools; its ownership and payment cannot.
Liangzhu's great construction projects preserve unusually concrete traces of labor. The city walls rested on broad stone bases set into wet clay, with earthen layers built above. Geoarchaeological study of more than 10,000 exposed construction stones found a preference for hand-portable pieces, commonly about 10–35 centimeters long and roughly five kilograms, gathered selectively from nearby hills and valleys. Differences between stone clusters indicate repeated small work groups operating within a coordinated design. This evidence supports collecting, carrying, placing, and compacting as real tasks without inventing a corvée system, wages, or named overseers.
The peripheral dams and levees similarly required large-scale coordination, but most were constructed between about 3100 and 2600 BCE. They belong to the inherited landscape of c. 2500 BCE, not automatically to its daily maintenance regime. The ICOMOS chronology allows that the system had ceased to operate by this time, while the city's internal waterways and occupied terraces remained in use. Residents may still have cleared channels and repaired banks, but the scale and authority behind late-phase maintenance are not known.
Specialized production was another part of the economy. Cong tubes, bi discs, axe blades, pendants, and other jades were shaped by sawing, drilling, grinding, and polishing with abrasives; the lack of writing leaves their ancient names and exact meanings unknown. Pottery, lacquered wood, bone, stone tools, basketry, and textiles required other linked skills and supplies. Workshops and craft waste show specialization, but they do not reveal whether artisans farmed as well, where every stage occurred, or how workers were recruited and supported. Nor can tools be assigned confidently to women, men, children, or fixed hereditary occupations.
Social Structure
Marked inequality is secure even though Liangzhu's social titles are not. The large Mojiaoshan platform and the separation of inner and outer settlement zones concentrated space and labor. At Fanshan, an elite cemetery established before 2500 BCE, 11 excavated tombs contained more than 1,100 jade objects as well as pottery, ivory, and lacquer; other cemeteries and graves had far fewer prestigious goods. Because burial treatment is selective and many organic offerings decay, grave wealth is not a complete census of living society. It nevertheless demonstrates unequal access to materials and specialized labor.
The chronology again limits what can be claimed. Fanshan and other high-grade cemeteries are clearest evidence for the earlier flourishing of the center and continued in use into about 2600 BCE; they are not a frozen picture of 2500 BCE. Residential terraces were still occupied after that date, so people lived among monuments and spatial divisions created by earlier generations. The extent to which late-phase residents retained the same authorities, rituals, or access rules remains uncertain.
Neither graves nor settlement plans provide names for farmers, builders, artisans, servants, rulers, or ritual specialists. They also do not establish marriage rules, inheritance, slavery, wages, or a gendered division of labor. Households and work groups must have coordinated food, child care, craft, and maintenance, but describing a standard nuclear family or allocating tasks by age and sex would exceed the evidence. Liangzhu's social order is most responsibly described through observable differences in burial, location, material access, and participation in large projects.
Tools and Technology
Liangzhu technology was not defined by jade alone. Polished stone adzes and axes, harvesting and processing implements, bone tools, and pottery served work that metal did not yet routinely perform. Ceramic containers survive far better than wooden vessels, cordage, baskets, handles, or mats, so the excavated assemblage systematically understates plant-based technologies. Claims that a particular broken object was repaired or reused require wear or modification on that object; reuse should not be assumed merely because it was economical.
Water and construction works joined material knowledge to organization. Builders laid broad stone foundations to create drainage and stability over wet ground, then raised earthen walls and platforms, in some places using grass-wrapped clay bundles beneath layers of silty clay. Piers and channels integrated built surfaces with waterborne movement. The system was technically complex, but its components had different dates and functions: dams outside the city, canals within it, terrace foundations, and field water control should not be treated as one timeless network.
Jade manufacture likewise involved a sequence rather than a single act of “carving”. Workers selected stone, removed material by sawing and abrasion, drilled openings—sometimes from both sides to reduce breakage—and polished surfaces with finer abrasives. Potters and textile workers followed their own chains from raw material to finished object. These sequences imply learned skill and repeated practice, while unfinished pieces and waste illuminate production more directly than finished grave goods alone.
Clothing and Materials
Clothing is among the least secure parts of a Liangzhu reconstruction. Fiber, leather, and wood decay in the region, and no contemporary text or complete local garment defines a standard cut. Evidence from earlier lower Yangtze settlements can establish a history of spinning and weaving, but it cannot simply be projected onto Liangzhu City in 2500 BCE. Nor can later Chinese dress supply the missing sleeves, trousers, footwear, colors, or social rules.
Direct finds elsewhere in the Liangzhu cultural area narrow the uncertainty. At Qianshanyang in northern Zhejiang, investigators identified ramie textile as well as spun silk, a braided silk band, plain-weave cloth, and reeled filaments. These remains show that both bast-fiber and silk technologies existed within the wider Liangzhu world. They do not show how common silk was at the city, which fibers most residents wore, how garments were fastened, or who performed spinning and weaving.
Adornment survives disproportionately in graves. Jade beads, pendants, discs, cong, and axe blades, along with ivory and lacquered objects, demonstrate conspicuous access to valued materials among selected dead; some objects may have been insignia or ritual equipment rather than everyday dress. Simpler fasteners and organic ornaments are less likely to survive. The safe conclusion is therefore uneven access to ornament, not that elite burial sets reproduce daily costume or that people in modest graves wore no decoration.
Daily life at Liangzhu around 2500 BCE unfolded within a center inherited from centuries of construction and still sustained by rice, craft, transport, and maintenance. Its terraces, stores, waterways, tools, and graves reveal interdependence and sharp inequality. They do not yield a universal household, meal, garment, occupation, or typical day. Keeping that distinction preserves both the remarkable scale of Liangzhu and the limits of what its surviving evidence can tell us about individual lives.
